I want to get rid of the pushbutton TF behind my '64's 318 Poly. While original, I want to go to a newer 727, with a floorbox....and hopefully one that I can later use behind a RB.

What year trans can I use and will it be a bolt-up to the present 318 poly ?

Thank you.

So I think I missed the question..........if there was one. :icon_axe:

Regardless of whether you use a cable shift or later trans, you won't be able to use the same one for your Poly as for a big block later. The early TFs are 727s attached to the Polys. While they are the same internally, the cases are different between the small and big blocks, unfortunately. I think '64 might have been the first year for the 904 to come into the picture, too. My Poly has a 727, though. I believe the later year trannies are 727s for big blocks and 904s for small blocks. The 904 is different internally from a 727.

May I ask why you want to eliminate the p/b shifter?????????I will NEVER give up my pushbuttons:icon_rambo:

I have to agree - push buttons are cool. If my car was an auto without the buttons, I'd switch it to a 4 speed.

(Pssst, maybe he can't type).

Seriously, though. 727's came behind big and small block engines. You'll need a small block one for the poly.(At least that's my understanding). Unfortunately, it won't be of much use when you get to the big block phase of your life. Alot of trucks and vans had the small block version of the 727, so you should be able to find one.

Your car is a convincing argument for keeping the pushbuttons. I'll rethink that one.

Thank you !

Here is another car I saw at Lebonon Valley Raceway:icon_syda:.I thought this was an Art Carr shifter, turn out it was a custom one off:icon_rambo: .Pushbuttons are what make our cars so different.I just prefer to shift with my right hand,I'm a righty:bootyshake:

Although not part of the original question I would like to offer one additional comment.
If part of your concern is the trunion/driveshaft configuration you can change yours to a slip yoke if you have a '65 trans (A or B engine) as a donor, but only the '65 will work. Many many changes in '66.
