Question about getting a Vehicle from Canada into the US

So I'm looking at a truck in Canada, what's the cost/process to getting it state side? Thanks.
 
Hopefully someone with experiance will respond. I've never done it, but I came very close to buying a 68 Barracuda, in Montreal, to bring home, to Virginia, 20 years ago. First thing you need to do is contact U.S. Customs to find out any current requirements. Besides any state sales tax when you get home, there may also be an import tariff and you may need to be prepared to pay that at the border. If the vehicle is newer than twenty five years old, you will need to prove it meets all US safety and emission requirements. That part could also mean a call to the US Dept of Transportation and/or the EPA.
If you go to Canada with cash to buy the car, there may be questions to answer about the amount of money you are taking across the border.
 
I have been looking into it and I think it's 2.5% for auto. But that's a good point about money over the border. Lol

A friend of mine bought a new car in the US and brought it to Ontario. He had to have it modified for day running lights to meet our requirements, but other than that, he just paid for provincial taxes and duty I believe.

I heard something interesting about having a car brought to the US for restoration work and brought back to Canada after completion. Apparently, if the value changes after having the restoration work, the owner could have to pay additional taxes, etc.
 
my good friend bought a 68 Hemi Dart Clone from Canada, and it was a nightmare. It took over 2 mos to get the car home. Here are some factors:
Location- depends where in Canada, and where you are located.
Season- we are going into winter, and that's gonna be a bitch to get drivers up there.
Cost- I looked at a 69 Superbee in BC and was given an estimate of $2500 to NJ. also, when declaring across the border, you're gonna be paying full sales tax.
DMV- I know my friend went through snafu after snafu dealing with NJ DMV. Make sure you have a clear idea of what it's gonna take to register it in your state BEFORE you buy.

im not sure if the system works both ways but i have brought a car into canada from the US. I needed to first purchase the car and get a receipt. i then had to bring this receipt along with the ownership and past owners details to the boarder. On top of this I had to get a certain release code from a broker about (~$120). this code ensures that there are no leans on the car. this code is also provided to the boarder with the ownership, past owners info, and the receipt. All this paperwork has to stay a the boarder for 72 hours and finally I could go back down to bring the car across and pay the taxes (13% into Canada). Its a long, stupid process for us Canadians and I hope its not the same for you guys going the other way. the brokers also work with shipping companies and can do all this for you if need be but im sure they charge a pretty penny!

Everything I have bought out of Canada was sent by mail - only paid duty if the value was over NZ$750
 
I've had stuff mailed and paid duties. I was wondering about transporting used stuff. I've bought and picked up new items and documents aren't an issue with proper receipts. Are used 50 year old items ever a problem?
 
as far as parts go ,what if you went on a holiday, saw a swap meet and bought something ? do they check EVERY car crossing the boarder ?
I'm sure the dogs aren't sniffing for old greasy car parts ,what if you just "forgot " to tell anyone you bought a couple of brake drums or a gearbox

If you're visiting for a few days they don't seem to care much. A buddy and i returned from Columbus with bright chrome Fender wells for his dart sitting in the back of his truck and we declared nothing.
I'll be across for an hour or so and a little tougher to explain. Worth a try but I'd hate to have stuff confiscated.

I have, for old greasy parts they couldn't be bothered. Just be honest and tell them you have a bunch of old parts and give them a low cost they wouldn't care about. Most of the time they will just wave you through. If you a bringing back new stuff life a set of tires or whatever just bring a receipt and claim it. Not worth being flagged. Been there done that not fun.
