My '64 Polara has the tapered axle rear end and I see no good reason to change it. However, I do want to make the rear brakes a bit more maintenance friendly by converting to slip on drums.

I have removed the rear hub/drums (I have the correct tool) and now I would like to remove the drums from the hubs without screwing up the hubs or lug bolts. I'm quite sure the drums are swedged and I plan on replacing them so there is no reason to protect them during removal. Is there a recommended way to remove the drum without damaging the hub or lug bolts?

Also, Raybestos drums for the '64 (10"x2 1/2") are available but is there any reason I can't replace them with the later '65-'70 (10"x2 1/2") slip on drums, as long as I don't intend to swedge them on the hubs? Logic says they should be the same except for the swedging provisions on the '64 versions.

Thanks.

Yes you should be able to do this I think there is a tool that works on a drill press that cuts the drum swedge off but I am not sure if it effects the studs you can then use the slip on drum. An old machine shop or parts store should have that tool.

That's a great article. The only change I would make would be to drill all the way through the stud. This will absolutely assure the stud will collapse instead of damaging the drum when you press or drive it out.

I have seen this article and have even passed it on to others. Didn't know you were a FBBO member. You are to be commended on the time you spent to do this and share it with others. Great job, And thanks!
