Question PS Box Coupler

I got a new power Steering box and the splines for the coupler are a little boogered up. I got it to go on about 1/2 inch and it stops, I tap lightly and the shaft starts to turn a little. My question is how hard can I tap on this without causing any damage to the internals?

I would take a small file and clean up the splines till it goes on with ease. A little lube might help too.

Thanks, I did clean with wire brush and used grease. I did manage to work it on with very light taps. It's not "with ease" but it will go on.

If it's new, take it back.
