Ive been looking at my options on a good resource for a complete axle rebuild kit, looked at Mancini and DrDiff anything else available, reason I'm asking I'm a novice with the differential and I cut the old bearings off the axles but behind the bearing were what appear to be circular locks holding them in place. Yea I cut them too. Are these in the kits or did I screw up?

The complete bearing on the carrier/center is an outer 'cage', then the cylinder bearings then an angled base that is press fit to the carrier. if you have cut those three off then your in the money. I don't remember there being a circular lock?

Got a pic? I have one apart on my work bench at the moment.

Sorry I read the title and thought you meant the diff not the axles, ignore what I said.

If you are planning on completely redoing the axle bearings, this is what you should get....
http://www.doctordiff.com/tapered-axle-bearing-package.html

OEM type wheel bearing/seal kit includes:

  • 2 Set 7 (A-7) tapered wheel bearings (your choice Timken or Precision)
  • 2 races
  • 2 white foam outer gaskets
  • 2 lock rings
  • 2 correct, OEM beaded steel inner gaskets
  • 2 inner axle seals
  • 2 outer axle seals
The circular lock rings are usually called locks or retainers. It's just an added bit of security for the bearing staying in place.

SgtLee I would recommend talking to Dr. Diff just for your own education if nothing else. I spent an hour on the phone with him talking axle/differential rebuild and he helped me tremendously. We even discussed dropped spindles and brake change-overs to disc and that was very informative. Worth the time and the man is very fair with pricing as well as his offerings are backed by in-depth knowledge of the Mopar systems.

^^^^^^^^^ What he said, Cass AKA Dr Diff is the way to go for parts and any information. A Very helpful guy.

Thanks Guys good information there, My internet has been down, sorry I was not able to respond until now. I hate not using the correct terms or names for various parts, I will call and c what he has to say. looking at what Cranky listed I was worried about having cut the lock rings off and not knowing what the proper terminology was made it confusing, and I see it listed in the kit. I'm sure Ill be going that route. I'm trying to keep this restoration simple as it was as it rolled out the factory door. Thanks for the help all!

Thanks for spelling it out so easy for me, do you think the precision bearing kit would be poorer quality, than the Timken. Am I just paying for the Timken name?

Not sure about the Precision name. I think from what little research I've done is that it's more of a house brand name and is more of a supplier/repackager vs. being a manufacturer....but the Timkens are still a very good bearing in my book. Do you plan on removing your own bearings? I have had decent luck in peening the lock ring real good and that usually will make it easier to press off or you can heat them up. A lot of people 'wash' the old bearings off with a torch but you have to be really careful not to get into the bearing fit or over heat the axle. Grinding them through in one area is another way but again, you have to be careful with that too....

Yes I got them off with a air grinder without scarring. Ready to purchase the kit, probably get the Timkens, Thanks

Another vote for Cass btw. I've brought two lots of diff rebuilds kits and bits from him. Got my second one on the way now. Really helpful and his prices are good.
