Guys, here is the master I removed from my newly aquired 68 manual brake, all drum car. My 1972 Motors Manual says, remove two brake lines, four holding bolts, disconnect rod at brake pedal, remove and replace. As you can see the replacement does not have the rod attached nor does any replacements show one. How is that rod attached, I have vised the cylinder and tried to beat the rod out. Have vised the rod and tried to hammer the cylinder off. Hate to smack it any harder till I m sure it SHOULD come loose. The piston is fully struck and has not moved either. The studs hammered into the old master will come out to reuse on the new, but do not fit , new holes to big. Trying to use nuts and bolts on the new by myself could be a challenge, studs would be much easier.
Is the old master original or has it been replaced. I see some had a bolt on cap and some had the wire held cap.....thanks....

My '68 Charger has the original mc with a center bolt going through the cover. It does not have the bale.
I believe there is a small bolt threaded through the mc housing and it fits into a slot in the piston to keep it from coming out.

Stand that master on it's nose and squirt some oil around the rod, hold the master on one side of your bench vise with the rod loose between the jaws and pry the rod using the rod hole and a long punch, screw driver, pry bar, what ever you have and the rod will pop out of the piston. There is a notch in the piston end that is captured by the rubber grommet that lives in the piston.
My new master also had too large sized holes for my OEM knurled studs. JB Weld is your friend here.

Thanks Mike, done lubed it and have already put a lot of force on poping it out. But now I know there is nothing but a rubber sleeve of some sort holding it in there , I will GET it apart. So the bolt on covers are period correct, when did they move over to the wire lock covers. My 67 Camaro was original with the wire lock cover.
I m wondering if I could do a small tack weld on a bolt head INSIDE the car....sure would make this change out much easier for the next slub that gets it......

I was serious about epoxying those studs into your new master.

Mike, my parts guy ordered me another mc with the bolt/clamp cover and it was a perfect fit. The old mounting bolt holes were the correct size to hammer in my old bolts......so , they are still available.....thanks.....

I said that because when I ordered a new 66 dual master for my 65, that was how I corrected the issue. It was silly too, the single master was twice the cost of the dual!
