So I have a 65 2dr. Coronet. Since the AWB is looking unlikely due to funds.... I'm thinking of the unthinkable. What would you think of a car at a show or cruise that had:

a shredded interior, crumbling dash primered fenders, a few rust holes in the qtrs and steel wheels with no hubcaps.

But when you look under the hood.. there was a prefect brand new looking 440 / 727 combo. Look at the front suspension....all brand new. Look underneath....you could eat off it. Obviously all go, NO show.....

Please don't the whole rat rod fad is a joke and thank god it's starting to fade away.

I'm out of funds. I'm not talking a rat rod where its a totally unsafe buggered POS. Just a car where it is cosmetically awful, but mechanically perfect.

Build it how YOU like!!!

I'd say go for it! Cool alternative to what ya usually see at the shows.....kind of a cool vintage sleeper concept

The ratrod thing is really stupid!I never seen anything like some off the junk (ratrod)when I was growing up!the 50's hotrods weren't that junkie!!!

I say drive it like you stole it and enjoy it. My wagon sat in the bodyshop for a couple years apart slowly coming together...I mean slowly due to money. I finally got tired of looking at a car and not driving it. Slapped it back together (made sure driveline and brakes were good) and drove the **** out of it for past couple years all awhile buying parts for the present. I have had more fun driving it without door panels, headliner, carpet and good paint than any other car. I satin'd it just to cover all the different colors and put some nice wheels on it and have received nothing but compliments. It rattles, stinks, drops parts and most of all brings smiles to my kids and my face. Have fun.

Notice no door panels in pic but big ole smiles. Car same day at Monster Mopar Weekend.

Smiles make it all worth while.

do it because you have to

I say, put it together in an unfinished state because you have to(no money) but don't do it on purpose. Nothing looks worse than a car that is built to look ratty and crappy on purpose. If you only have the funds to do it that way because you want to drive it and take it some where than go for it. I hate the term RAT ROD. It seems to mean building something crappy looking for shock value only. Most people like a finished car, they just do what you are doing so they can get out there and have fun. Not many people want a car that is not finished to stay like that. Just a few gold chainers who build a 32 ford that is made to look at a barn find. I like barn finds, I just look at them and picture what they will look like when they are refinished to their former glory.

My motor is done, rear is done, trans is done. I'll do the brakes and suspension....no worries. I just don't have the $$$ to throw at the body at this time. Maybe Unfinished is a better term than rat rod.....

Love the wagon BTW? smiles- - -yup. My kids don't like my wagon. :(

I know you can build it shopguy! you need the $300 torsion bars and 2 sticks of 2x3 channel and you are half way there. I still got to get those pics all together for you step by step and you will use your origional k frame. alter your fenders and grille and wala you are there

Myself, I never cared for the "rat rod" look. Maybe it's because I owned my share of them in the day,(RATTY CARS) because I didn't have the funds to fix them up. I agree with hemiEssex, just put it together and have fun with it, until you get the extra funds,----a piece at a time. A '65 Coronet is a very nice looking car. Hang onto it, and have patience...

drive it!!!!!!!!!!!! had a 55 buick that well the outside looked good from 20 feet but floors where a quick falt metal patch motor ran so so all she could do was stop nice , had alot of fun with her though

I agree put it together and enjoy it the way you like it. Ron

mines unfinished probably wont paint till next year i drive mine every year in its unfinished state its in urethane white sealer its originaly a white car anyways ,the sealer just looks satin kind of like faded paint it has a some what of a sheen to it i just work on mine every year and it just keeps looking a little better every year i just put new interior in and i have new bumpers to put on yet so it will look even better this year than last just put yours togethor and drive it and enjoy it trust me you will get plenty attention with it that way just for the simple fact you hardly see these cars around that much, check out my photos and see what you think with going this route.

As well as my 64 Polara I have a 30 Ford coupe that's a good late 40's early 50's style Rod. The only thing that pisses me off more than shitty looking Rat Rods, is people confusing my model A for one of those ratty buckets of crap!

There's a huge difference between a traditional type Rod and a poorly put together, purposely neglected, rusty, bastard car. I say, put the car together if you really want to drive her now, and rattle can the outside in an nice even coat of black primer. If she's mechanically sound, and painted in one shade of matt black primer she'll probably look very decent. Just my thoughts, Rat Rods are ****, your ride deserves better.

I really want to go altered.......The front scares me though. The back, not so bad.

The Jayhawker has the rear moved, but it looks like the front is stock. That might be an option.
