I'm having an issue removing the passenger side rear axle. Do I need to loosen the adjusting collar first? I have been banging on it using the brake drum as a slide hammer for a while now with zero results. The axle has about 1/2 of slop before it hits whatever is holding it in.

The driver side was a cake walk.

Any thoughts? Gona try a real slide hammer tomorrow.

Did you take off the 5 retaining nuts?

You got me now. Haven't ran into that problem before.

Strangely, I ran into that same problem myself a couple weeks ago except on the left side. I've had the axles out of my car 3 times in the last 6 months and this was the only time one hung up. For some reason the bearing retainer flange was hanging up on the studs in the axle housing. I had to work the retainer flange back and forth with a big screwdriver and finally work it off the studs. I have no idea what caused it to hang up - got started crooked coming off or something.

I had a Brother-in-Law call me last year about an axle he couldn't remove from the tube. I went over to his house with my slide hammer that has a vice grip on the end. I put a lug nut on one of the studs, clamped the vice grips on it and proceeded to hammer away. I had the axle free in about 5 hits. This was on a GM 12 bolt.

The retaining flange may be hitting the strut, which is above the retainer, that goes between the shoes. I had to undo these when I was working on a customers Challenger.

I noticed that was going to be an issue and removed them. Now I need to figure out how to reinstall drum brakes!

Slide hammer solved it. Bent the mounting plate somehow.

Sounds kind of like my experience except I don't think mine is bent - just got cocked on the studs.

Ouch! I can just picture the adjuster flange cocking on you and hanging on those studs once pulled away from the axle flange/backing plate.
For future axle hangs, maybe the answer is knocking the flange studs back if you can't just pull the axle out.

I checked the flange studs and the threads are fine. If it was hanging on those the threads would be toast.

I retract my statement - mine doesn't look fubar'd like that at all. Just hangs up a little but can be worked off and on the studs.

No clue. But you would think if it was on the bolt threads that I would see at least a little damage. I have none.
Not necessarily - the bolts are hardened and the flange is not as hard. Look closely for damage in the bolt holes in the flange..
