Ok, taking the car aronud the block it sounds like and electric trains set..Lionel old school stuff... not the simulated locomotive either...LOL
Talked to the mech who did the exhaust and he said it thought it was the rear. He checked the fluid but though the bearing were the culprit.

500-800 depending on if I do gears.. Can I do this myself? He said its like a 9" chunk it just drops out? I dont even know what rear is in it.. maybe I should start with a picture and identify that first/

Remove the drive shaft and check that the pinion hasn't backed off first. They are bad about it.

Start with figuring out which rear end you have. There should be some casting numbers on there that will help.

If it's just an axle bearing you can easily do most of the work yourself. If it's in the pumpkin I would take it to a pro for repair or simply swap out with a known good unit.

Rusty makes a good point ... simple fix if that is what is wrong.

If it's a drop out center section (3rd member), it's an 8 3/4.

if it is that noisy then just run it in gear on jack stands to find were the noise is comming from.like said above, axle bearings are easy but the center section takes a lot more knowhow.as cranky said it sounds like an 8 3/4 rear.

If you are in the Portland area send me a PM, I could help you trouble shoot the problem. I have been around the block a few times.:icon_fU:

When does it howl? Throttle or coasting? Around corners? Like Rusty says, check the yoke and while your checking it, make sure it is tight then see if it moves in and out. If it does then the pinion bearings or shot. If it howls manly around a corner then it probably a wheel bearing.

Diffs aren't hard to rebuild. Are some steps to follow and need a bigass impact gun and a dail indecator.

check to see if pinion is loose 8 3/4 are pretty bad about losing preload. It's not hard to do yourself . but if it is loose go back with a crush sleeve eliminator. it's all bench work after you take out the center section.

Could be something simple as backlash play. If you are sure its the center section, Pull the axles out. (5 bolts each side). Pull the drive shaft, then 10 nuts hold the 3rd member to the axle housing. Then remove it by pulling it straight forward. Unless your pretty strong have a friend help, or use a good jack. Its heavy. Then you can tell how much back lash etc you have and go from there.
