hello everyone!! i have a 8 1/4 (no grip) under my 1974 satellite and i would like to swap the rear end out with a 9 1/4. would that be a upgrade or not. would have to change the drive line. or anything

thanks for the help. Daniel

It would be an upgrade, and I think it has a bigger yoke, so a new drive line or a conversion ujoint would be on order.

Another thing to consider is the 9.25" might require a shorter drive shaft.

Definitely an upgrade for strength, but it does weigh more. As long as you get one from a B body, you should have no problems with the swap (as far as overall width and location of spring pads on the axle tubes.) The reach from the axle centerline to the front of the pinion yoke is the same, so you won't have to alter your driveline unless you want to switch it to the larger U-joint. I ran a conversion U-joint on mine for a while, until I swapped my 318/904 for a 440/727 and needed a shorter driveline. New driveline has the larger joints at both ends.

I would swap to an 8 3/4 , they are fairly cheap, some what plentiful and a Hell of a lot Tougher than most people give them credit for.

That and you can swap differentials in a matter of minutes. 8 3/4 is slightly bigger from axle centerline to center of rear U-joint (11.69 inches for 8 1/4 and 9 1/4, 12.35 inches for 8 3/4)
