Rear Main Side Seal Sticks ?

I can't seem to find the white Side Stick Seals anywhere....The ones that were real Easy to slide in & diesel fuel or mineral spirits would swell up & expand to seal tight ...What Material did Chrysler use & how can I Reproduce a few ? .....Do the Mr Gasket #1968 Rubber side Seal work as good or better ?
 
pipe clears folded in half and saturated with RTV
 
I never use them. A small mount of anerobic sealer on the cap. Ultra Grey on the sides . Fill the cap bolt holes. Not all pans cover these holes completely. Motor never leaks a drop. Been building big blocks like this for years.

SCA Gaskets .....Is that same as "Southern Cross Aviation " in Ft Lauderdale, FL ?? .... Squirting RTV in those side slots just seems "wrong" .....But apparently works for some....I tend to go "traditional" Mopar factory style, mostly.....Any idea What the Oem stick material is ?

Doesn’t work it shrinks
 
Chrysler didn't have the opportunity to use RTV in 1958 so they used the "sticks". Now they use it for pan gaskets. Use the RTV.

I have little experience with RTV,.... Isn't that the stuff that doesn't Always successfully Seal but Always leaves a hard almost impossible to remove reminant stuck to the metal ? Or have I been using the wrong type of product labeled RTV ??
 
It always seals if:
- the surfaces are clean
- it is used to seal against chemicals/substances that it is designed to seal up.
- used within it's temp operating range.

If you want the rear seal area leak free...throw the side seals in the bin.
Fill the cavities in the seal housing with sil to slightly above the surface.
Leave to cure.
Trim the excess when cured.
Install housing with sil down the sides & base.
 
Thx,...All good on the RTV clean surfaces prep & seal part....What about the later tear down & RTV Removal issue ?? This stuff, for me has Never just come off & Released from the metal parts like a rubber O-ring, but is really Stuck on like Glued & reluctant picked off in dozens of very hard rubber bits you easily can damage Metal parts trying to get it clean enough for a new seal install...Is this the Same RTV product I'm to use on a fairly fragile Aluminum seal Retainer ??

You must be thinking of a different product.
RTV stays flexible, Ultra Black or Ultra Gray work very well with oil.
Can be removed from metal with a wire brush.
 
Just carefully looking over the rear main seal area & noticed there seems to be a missing rear main seal gasket issue where the aluminum Retainer upper flat bosses mate up against the iron block flat boss faces.....That small area each side Between the side seals & the rope or rubber crank seal.... It's metal to metal without any gasket at all !! There's No mention of any gasket (or sealant) there in the highly detailed Mopar Service Manual & factory never sealed metal to metal without gasket material (paper or cork) using just shellac sealer....What prevents oil from leaking between those metal to metal assembly points ?? Neither the main seal, side seals nor oil pan gasket seals cover those 2 areas & I've never seen any Mopar sourced instructions address this ??

Did you read my post ? I'm as nuts as anyone about leaks. My engines are waxed.

I didn't initially associate the smallish red streaks for the anerobic sealer....Is it possible Chrysler for some reason, intended Not to use Any sealant there & wouldn't std engineering practice have been to use a full perimeter paper gasket between block & retainer, totally surrounding the Retainer bolts at the retainer to block joining point ?
 
Don't worry about what chrysler did 50 yrs ago.
I use ultra black in these areas myself.
All the suggestions here are good.
 
Thx for all responses & DVW very informative photos..... That's absolute functional Perfection !! Don't know why the Oem Side Stick Seals are so Unappreciated,. The Oem Side Stick pieces have always (for me) Controlled Expanded properly, done their assigned Engineered function & sealed perfectly with the Least later cleanup mess effort & Didn't seem to need any modification alterations there....I think I have a better understanding of how the Rear Seal assembly works now...
