Just went to install my new rear speakers, was surprised to find the metal openings ran in different directions. the left side runs front to back and the right side runs side ways the way I thought they both would run. Anyone know why they did this?

I am only guessing but I think there was a rear defrost option that would not fit with the speakers going the same direction. Also I believe they are different sizes also. Just a weird Mopar thing.

They took the 6x9 ok except part of the speaker did not line up totally with the cut outs slots, I don't know how this will affect the sound coming out. But on the top the cut outs look the same, in the back window area. Any defrost units I have seen have been in the center of back window, is this right?

One of the wonderful idiosyncrasies of our cars.

If the `68 factory option packages were the same as in `66, there was only one speaker offered for the rear...on the driver's side. The left hole was for the fan intake of the rear window defrost option. That is probably why it is a different size/ orientation. I doubt you will notice any audiable difference due to speaker orientation (front-to-back vs side-to-side). They are both louder up on the package tray.

That is interesting - I always wondered what the reasoning was for the different direction holes in my Road Runner. Why then are the speaker holes in my Charger going the same direction? Could you not order rear defrost in a Charger?

In the AM 8 Track configuration the wonderful folks at ChryCo, who were always trying to optimize our wonderful cars through modern engineering, discovered that you could get almost surround sound in the 2 Door cars with the contoured rear window and that config, by mounting one speaker horizontally and the other oriented vertically. The horizontal (to the back seat) speaker would direct the sound directly up and across the headliner toward to the front window and back at the occupants head on while they were hearing it coming across the roof area as well. The vertical (again to the back seat) speaker would direct the sound waves up at that wonderful rear window which would cause and undulating effect on the sound waves as it was redirected around the interior of the car, bouncing it off of the rear glass, around the side window, toward the front window, and back along the passengers side windows.

This was the actual start of surround sound technology.

This post was tongue in cheek and will be deleted lest it get propagated as fact or urban legend.

Damn...that actually sounded plausable! :icon_pray: Ha-ha!

I could see it easily getting propagated as fact. Nice work, brotha! :headbang:

hunt2elk,

Ya gotta read his fine print (disclaimer) at the bottom of his post, "...This post was tongue in cheek and will be deleted lest it get propagated as fact or urban legend. "

Translation: He made it up...pretty good, huh?

Surround sound, that's a good one. Probably explains the contour of the glass too. I guess Superbirds lose the surround sound effect in favor of speed downforce aerodynamics.
Thanks for today's chuckle
John

I guess I finally am going to have to admit that I need to wear glasses - didn't even see the fine print!!!
My post was referring to if Chargers were not available with the rear defrost option, as mine has the speaker hole oriented in the same direction.
