When I bought my 74 Charger 360 Rallye in 1987, it had dual exhaust with the slotted chrome tips but the rear valance did not have the cutouts openings in it for the tips to extend through. They actually were below the valance. I have since installed a valance with the openings in it. My broadcast sheet has code N41 for dual exhaust w/o tips and N42 for Chrome dual exhaust tips. I believe at some time between 1974 and 1987, the valance was probably changed with the wrong one. Anyone seen this before? Opinions? This I believe is a California car originally.

Terry,
Mine is a California car as well. I would have to go down and take another look at my fender tag and build sheet but I'm almost positive mine said exactly the same thing. confusing at first, but I suppose if you look at it in the eyes of Chrysler you can't put chrome tips on a car that doesn't have dual exhaust. However you can put dual exhaust on without chrome tips. That's kind of the way I looked at it anyway.

ODZKing, does the rear valance on your car have the cutouts for the tips? I assume it does. My car looked strange with the tips below the valance.

Chrysler did not sell cars with exhaust tips in California in those years. So if you had dual exhaust in California, you got turndown tailpipes.

I know 71-72 cars better. For those years, N41 would always have been coded (for high performance engines) and N42 added when the tips were optioned.

Mine is a 73 and came from Ventura, California with dual exhaust and tips with the cutouts.
Here are the fender tags

This is an often repeated story that is mostly wrong...

Chrysler sold lots of cars in California with tips, lots of 340’s, 383’s, 440-4’s, 400’s & 360’s...
Plus 440-6 & 426 Hemi up to 69... but the 70 & 71 440-6 & 426 Hemi could not pass California’s noise testing ordinance...

Agreed, I even have at least one example in my database of a 71 440+6 road runner from CA coded N42 and N97. Came with tips and resonators. Many years ago before it was restored, I looked at the car (considered buying it) and verified this.

I’ve seen a few as well, both built that way & coded for it as well as dealer installed tips and rear valances to make the sale..

I should have been more specific with this statement. The original post asked about 74 Charger with dual exhaust. So did a 74 Charger with dual exhaust come with either turn downs or Flame throwers optional in California? My understanding was no Flame thrower tips in California. Obviously with the plain valance on his car, it had turn downs originally.

1974 Dodge Charger

Chrome exhaust tips (Machine Gun Tips) where STANDARD on all 4 Barrel V8 Dual Exhaust systems

However in CA you couldn’t get the 400 4 Barrel Single Exhaust or 400 4 Barrel Dual Exhaust High Performance engine

Still could get a 360 E58 or the 440 E86 with dual exhaust and tips...

Can't go with you on that. I know someone with a 74, 400 that had HP and dual from factory. Had to be ordered though.
Besides, the Hamtramck info only says 225 not available in CA.

Thank you for all the information. Great to know the options. My car is going back together with the tips and valance cutouts.

Interesting ... didn't see that line.
But ... 440, no problem, how ridiculous.
I wonder how closely that was followed since I know there were 400s from there.
