Iv searched around and can’t seem to find exactly what I’m experiencing so I’m guessing I messed up somewhere along the way.
I installed the original rear window on the 68 charger the other day with 5/16 m3 ribbon sealer. The window seems to fit fine along the top and bottom and the four corners. But at the inner sail panels there is a noticeable gap. About 1/8-1/4. If tried using a heat gun to soften the adhesive to get it to squish down more but still no contact. Iv also noticed that the trim clips along the sail panels are not popping out as much as the others. I’m worried that during the metal work process we missed this “dip” and now I need to take it back to address that. Is this something anyone has come across? Do I have any other options? I’m thinking a thinner application of adhesive would help close my gap but the “dip” in the trim clips would still be an issue.

A caution for people with high powered weed eaters:

I went through this a few years back. The original glass got shattered when a rock got thrown against the back of the car while I was trimming down weeds.
I’ll bet most of your questions will be answered there.
I did read this one. Did you notice a gap in the window and butyl tape? And when you say you sealed it up with the other adhesive how so? Just over the top ? So that it fills those gaps?.

What I’m worried about here is that the AMD quarters it has have a dip in them along the inner sail panels. Wich would also be why my clips are not sticking above the window as well.

I’d assume I could add more butyl in those sections to close the gap… after I rased those clips to adjust for the “dip”

I smeared windshield urethane adhesive against the butyl rubber seal from the inside.
The rear window channel had rust in it when I got the car. We cut out the rusty sections and patched them back. A buddy made some sections and also used some stampings I got from Sherman and associates. This was late 2001-2002 before AMD came along. My window channels are a little wavy so a simple butyl ribbon would not have sealed well. There were gaps where the metal wasn’t even. The urethane adhesive filled in the gaps. Trim on the outside and inside hide it.
My AMD rear window channel window was thinner but I don’t know if it was shorter or narrower since I had no other intact glass to compare. The trim fits nice though. (Forgive the dust).

Is that your old glass or new? The glass can be installed two ways. I would get it out and clean off the sealer and then fit the glass without the sealer.

I only have the original glass that came with the car. I did pull the window out and reinstalled it without the butyl. Set it in there to see if I had thicker sections along the tape. But the measurements are consistent. What would the second way to install it be?

You can flip it over and it will lay in place. You should be able to see the right way as there is a slight curvature. I only suggest this as it has been discussed before.

Have any links to those discussions? I couldn’t find any. I believe I have it sitting correct.

I cant find them. Google is not always friendly. I just remember reading the discussion and thought it was worth while to mention. You can run a straight edge on the opening as well as the glass just to see if it is possible. Relating back to the article I thought it was odd and impossible to do but obviously some one did and others were making comments. It just made me think twice on mine. I opted for a new glass and had my old to compare. The old had a sticker on the inside along with scratch marks from the trim on the outside so I was able to see the way mine had to go. Put it this way you should at least check the possibility because you will be doing a lot of work and painting otherwise to correct it if it is put together wrong. I find it odd that both sides are exactly the same. Recheck that glass for being flipped the wrong way.

Ok yeah I’m 99% sure I have it the correct way. I also have marks on the original glass from the trim. I think I’ll have to resort to adjusting the butyl tape thickness and adjust the two clips that are not sticking out enough. Shouldnt be able fo tell once it’s all together.

I know when I test fitted my glass with no butyl tape it laid relatively flat to the opening all the way around. You also need to consider how the headliner grippers will fit along with the plastic interior trim.
