I have a 63 Belvedere with tapered axles. when i got the car the threads on the tapered axles were exploded. does anyone make replacement tapered axles or can i get a non tapered axle and put it in the housing?

Thanks

I have asked the same question about my 64 when I first got it. The local experts told me you can not fit a newer (65+) axle into my tapered housing.

You can't use later axles (after '64) in an earlier housing. Also your chances of finding a pair of tapered axles in good condition are not good. The threaded ends of the axles are usually mangled by someone trying to get the hubs off using the wrong puller and/or method of removal. That's why most guys go to a 66-70 rear end to avoid the headaches of pulling the drums to do brake jobs on these rears. The later B rears bolt right in.

Your right. I do have a great set of tapered axles. Their still in the original housing. I ordered a Moser housing and axles to get away from my perdicament. Its costly but the best solution for me. I just pulled the whole ole housing out and plopped in the new one with a new pumpkin. It also gave me an extra inch of tire space to on each side.

I would think you'd be able to find a decent one without a lot of trouble. A lot of guys have swapped out their tapered axle rears for '65 and up rears, as mentioned.
Check out the '62-'65 site below. There's a very helpful email clubhouse group that you can join for free. Then you could post a message on it and see if someone close to you has a good axle.

Over on moparts web site there is a member called doctor differential that sells non tapered axle shafts for your 63 housing. Check out his web site he advertises over there. I look into it for my 64 and I think new axels were 300 dollars and new rear brakes 300 dollars. that was a couple of years ago so prices could be different but at least you would have an option. Look under the on-line swap meet on the differential for sale section you'll find his ad there.

There is a solution to replace the axles with non-tapered ones in the existing housing. Its not cheap but it is possible.

doctordiff.com ... just give him a call.
