In the garage. Under the hood. Again.
So-o-o-o...now it's time to deal with electrical issues on the '64 Sport Fury. First;how the bleep does one get the knob on the headlight/dimmer switch off? After that;does the black ring unscrew from the switch? I've got working headlights, but not marker lamps, backup lights, brake lights or taillights when the switch is pulled to the "on" position. My turn signals work in the back, but not the front. The interior lights come on when I step on the brake pedal.:rolling::rolling::rolling: WTF!!!!!!!!!!!:confused::confused: I've got new switches;getting the old ones off is proving to be troublesome. Any advice is appreciated!!!!!

Hey Al, here are a couple wiring diagrams. It sounds like you have the wires at the steering coulmn connector mixed up.

I forget the exact details but the headlight switch knob pulls out with the shaft in place, then you unscrew the ring on the dash side.

HitIt;thanks! I bought one of those large-size color-coded laminated diagrams a while back;I recommend that to anyone doing an old ride. This car sat in storage for many years, but no evidence of Mickey and Minnie and the kids taking up residence under the dash. The wires look good,condition-wise.

I told you guys that I was going to request help with the electrics. I'm beginning to understand why electricians consider themselves superior to the rest of us wrench-throwing garage apes. So,I won't make any disparaging remarks about electricians:no:.

Al,

There's a tiny little pin that you have to push in to release the shaft that the knob is attached to.

small button on the bottom of switch, push it in,at same time pull and twist the knob! it should come right out.might have to do it a couple of times!

Does this mean that you have to open the door when you hit the brakes?:rolling:

Yeah,I use a bungee cord as a limiting device...

OK,seriously...I found out the taillight issue was one of the fuse clips not contacting the fuse itself. Pulled it back into position, and "Voila!",the taillights work, the brake lights work, the turn signals work('cept for the right front marker-hmmm;has a new bulb...) and the license plate lights work. Effin'-A! But...there's always a but...the interior lights are now on vacation.:tongueflap: I need to pull the headlight switch and check the position of the dimmer "wheel"(it doesn't "click" into position when turned to the left to activate the interior lights),and the door button (with door open per RedPolara's suggestion:grin:) doesn't activate them either.

Hey,it's serious progress;it wasn't all that long ago that I was questioning this "relationship" and wondering if I had made the right decision.:black_eye: I'm still going to have to deal with a leaking trans(pump seal?) that could curtail driving(and I'm so freakin' close!). If the trans issue can't be resolved without a rebuild,I'll just pull the whole driveline, and plan for next year. It's been disheartening as hell to keep resolving issues, but I can take some pride in the fact that I've resolved(with the help of you folks) most of them, and did them myself.

The saga will continue...

All right now! we have most of the electrical working. Added a vacuum cap to the brake switch button end,and cured the "brake lights on" syndrome-yes,I did turn the master cylinder plunger arm out,but to no avail, and I didn't want to completely unscrew it! So-o-o-o...we are still without dash lights(I know there's a thread in another area;I'll check it out),but the three auxiliary gauges light up. The ignition "on" light works, but the gauges aren't lit. Back to the garage...

You know;if I can figure this **** out,and get and keep it working, could I consider myself an electrician?

...or just lucky?:yes::yes::yes:

Al,

I'm going through the same kinds of things. Currently I'm trying to get the speedometer and temp gauge working. They've both been an ongoing trial and error thing. My headlights weren't working at first either, but it turned out to be the dimmer switch. Just needed a new switch. Still having fun, though!

Good to see your getting it sorted Al, but we're all looking forward to the next episode of " When Sport Furys Attack" :black_eye:

Actually, this car and I have had a good relationship;a bit rocky at times but she hasn't tried to maim/injure/kill me. I think it appreciates that I'm trying to return her to her former glory. Now,I'm trying to get the brakes bled, using a vacuum power bleeder and it's turning into another adventure-for another section on this site-sort of like living with a red head. You never know what's next.

I'll deal with the dash lights later;when the brakes are done,I will actually try to DRIVE her. That hasn't happened yet...
