Do these old cars have some kind of rev limiter or do I need to be careful?

Just checking to see if it is April 1

If not
No
Yes use 4000rpm in your case

Nope. None. You should be OK with an automatic, but if you have a manual shift car and beat on it an aftermarket rev limiter might be a good idea. You can get an upgrade electronic ignition box from Summit, MSD, and others that has one built in.

318's will take a lot more than 4000 rpm but your valve springs may not let it go up any higher than 4000 or so.

I guess you can call that a rev limiter!
