RMS retainer question

There are side seals in the rear main seal retainer but what seals the top of it against the block? Do I just use some sealant there?

Yes just some sealant.
I personally fill the side grooves with sealer as well (ultra gray my choice there) and chuck the side seals.
Let cure a bit, assemble snug, let it sit overnight and then torque it down.
