The Roadrunner has lost its transmission. Since the car was running when it got here didnt feel the need to do much with the engine and transmission other than to make it look presentable.. Was trying to tune the carb one day and went to take it for a spin to see if it ran any better. Well I get it and put it in reverse and hear a ping. Kinda like something hitting tin.

I go to back up and it felt as if the brakes were hung up. Needless to say I got another transmission and have since pulled both the engine and transmission. The engine needed to be freshened up with gaskets and whatnot. So here are some progress pictures. I have it ready to be put back in the car as of right now. Bought a Hughes performance transmission. Hope it hold up. This is a driver and will probably only see an occasional burnout.

While the engine was out I was able to install the firm feel stage 2 with relative ease. Keeping it black under the hood for now. I know its not correct. But just want to get it back on the road before summer is over.

Side note.. Here is my neighbors "racing 383" piston. Looked like a grenade was thrown into the engine. The other one was much worse and stuck in the block. I told him to get them out and make trucknutz out of them.

Ouch! My 1st guess..... main bearing spun, crank stopped moving all of a sudden & bent up the whole works on your friend's motor. Am I right?
He said he was doing a pull and the shifter fell into neutral and this is the result of an over rev. My question to him was. Do you know how to lift? He said it happened when he was at WOT. Not sure what shifter he has but turns out a detent ball fell out of it causing it to drop itself into neutral. The cam was about a half inch back and the lobes were only half way on the lifters. put a small hole in the side of the block. And grenaded 4 valves 2 pistons and the crank.

OMG that sucks! I'm scared as hell about that especially since I don't think I have my rev-limiter wired in correctly. I blew a motor missing a shift years ago and it literally took less than 1-second...no time to lift.

He said his mechanic friend swapped pills in his MSD and he didn't know it. So there was no rev limiter on the msd at the time. Might have saved it maybe not.

when i saw the twist in those rods i was gonna ask what rpm did he make it too.had a buddy seize a motor and when we pulled the heads off we were looking down the bore at the side of the piston.same kinda situation.rpm limiters are well worth the money people.

What is meant by the phrase "the detent ball fell out" and how does that put the car in neutral unexpectedly?

thats what he told me.. I believe it has a reverse valve body.

Apparently no neutral lock out on the shifter.

Does anyone make a good stand alone revlimiter at a resonable price?

Also the guy that was working on his car apparently did something with the pills in the MSD box.
