I cant seem to find a spec for the rod side clearance, any of you know what it is for a 440?

should be .015 to .019 , 1 of my motors has even more than that do to looking for even lighter rods, as long as you aren't tighter than .015

A lot of side clearance means more oil being slung around the engine and up on the cylinder walls. Some say it puts more oil 'load' on the rings and some say it doesn't hurt but if you are after every single horse power that you can get, try to keep them tight and not excessive. Not too many years ago, the aftermarket rod manufacturers were making them in the Chevy big end size which will give you around .060 clearance. Many ran them that way but I don't really like it.

this is going back for me but many years ago i have done some h/p small block chev engines and if i remember right if it was under .020 it was border line and if it was over .040 is was another border line, its a lube not a wash and the more volume you are pushing needlessy costs power.
