I was reading my 2013 NHRA rule book and if I understand correctly if my car retains the original dash (unaltered), firewall, and floor which it does. I am not required to install a roll cage to run as low as 10.0 just need a 5 point roll bar? So if I were to buy an eight point kit I would not need to have the extra braces on the hoop behind the seats welded on, correct?

Btw how does the whole getting it certified work?
Thanks
~Nick

Haven't had a rule book in a couple of years but I don't think you need to get it certified until you hit 9.50

I would check NHRA's website www.nhraracer.com ,
for rules & certification requirements, they might have changed allot...

basic stuff, like fuel & brake line material, fittings clamps etc. & routing the stuff too

a roll bar after 11.49 et

sfi cert. belts, even how & where they attach

sfi cert. flywheel, pulleys, damper etc.

driveline safety loop

cert. axles

parachute after 150mph

lugs with studs with the treads exposed, extending out like
1/2"+ using slicks or drag radials

radiator overflow

tire/speed ratings etc.

there are certain speed requirements tech stuff too,

that will also dictate some different SFI tech needs/rules

Don't quote me; just examples by memory {that's bad...LOL}
full cage with continuous top hoop,
specific min. tubbing thicknesses, mild steel vs chrome-moly
& front bars, engine bay bars or dash bars with a 8-10pt, 12 pt cages,
with reinforcement plates where it contacts the floor etc.
{IIRC after 10.0/9.99 & faster now has to be certified}

faster than that stuff starts it's getting more complex,
there's differing certs./reg.'s/requirements,
for different classes too

IIRC you also need a NHRA/IHRA comp license &
pass a FAA type medical physical too after faster than 9.99

Most tracks will have some sort of contact for NHRA tech officials or chassis certification,
usually early in the season too, check with your local NHRA/IHRA sanctioned tracks

they have @ track certification days at some wed.'s at some big national events,
you need to contact NHRA or what ever sanctioning body you plan on running,
make sure your legal, allot of new rules & reg's now, even with sfi clothing & et's now...

I'd highly suggest to get a new 2015-2016 rule book, I don't know what all has changed...

I wouldn't want to steer you wrong, good luck &
have fun, that's what it's all about, not all the rest of the petty crap,
that you see here sometimes....

You are correct. You only need the main hoop, rear two bars through the package tray down to the frame rails, and the one forward bar beside the driver to the front floor pan. Most people add both forward bars. If you go any faster than that you'll need to add a bunch more to cert to 8.50 and from there, you can do several other variations all having different SFI certifications. A 5 or 6 point bar doesn't need any certification, but if you go any faster requiring at least an 8.50 cage, it does.Once you've got the cage finished, you just call the local track and find out who does the chassis certs in your area and have that guy certify it. You can get either IHRA or NHRA inspections and it seems that each honors the others inspections.

Thanks guys, wanted to make sure I was on the right page, some of it is a little confusing trying to sort through all the information so thanks for simplifying it for me budnicks!. I'll probably grab a new book here soon if 2016 is out. But from what I googled it doesn't seem like much changed concerning me yet thats just what I am seeing others post online. Thanks Hemirunner, It's all new to me to me. my dads race car quickest time was just over 11.70 so we never had to deal with much at the track all they ever seemed to check was the dates on the helmet and nitrous bottle in the trunk.

Ask a question?

Not to hijack but do you mind if I ask a question of the Roll Bar experts gathered here? Hmmm... Hearing no objections:

My car is a road course car rather than a drag race car. The stuff I do does not generally have any written requirements for a roll bar or cage as I am running with other "stock" cars. Nonetheless, stock seats are not much fun in the corners. I'd like to switch to a good racing seat(s) and a good set of racing belts, for my own safety as well as comfort. Can anyone recommend the best way to get a "Harness Bar" into the car without installing a full bar or cage? Or a way to do a four point roll bar with a harness bar (removable?) that would still allow me to put the kids in the back seat (when cruising)? I know it won't necessarily meet the drag rules, but it WILL be safer and more comfortable I expect.

Are they all custom or is there a kit for a 70 Roadrunner out there? Seems like these things are all custom built.

Thanks. I now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion.

These are legal, I believe, if you are wanting to make roll bar or cage installation easier and/or removable.

You are right as I just run a 6 point rollbar and my car is legal to 10.0. Since my car is a street car I did not want a full cage as its more bars to climb around when getting in and out and since the 5 point bar is legal I went with the 6 point bar as I also put the door bar on the passengers side as it helped stiffen the car more. Thanks everyone!
That was my concern Ron, I didn't want to make it a pain to run around town. I know I wouldn't mind it but anyone who rides with me might hate it. So making it somewhat feasible for someone to slide into the rear seats is what I would like with the 6 point.
