Is there any harm in mixing brands of solid roller lifters on a roller cam? My brother is building a bracket race engine and is trying to do it on the cheap. He's got a lunati cam with some lunati lifters and some comp cams lifters. I've advised him against it but he won't listen. So what's the verdict?

I would think as long as the oil grooves and oil holes are in the same place on the different lifters that it will be ok. That said, cheaping out" is not something I recommend on a roller engine.

neither comp or lunati make those lifters. inspect them and make sure the wheel is the same diameter and the push rod location is the same. this is a very poor place to go cheap.

The big concern is some Roller lifters need to be in sleeved lifter bores. Not all, also the the roller pin center line distance to the pushrod seat needs to be very close. If they are the same then your ok. used roller lifters can be reused. I usually far these moves since it is classic corner cutting and leads me to believe other areas are having corners cut.

As long as we're talking solid rollers, here, you could have 16 different ones in an engine and as long as they aren't exposing the oil galley to the roller wheel cutout, and as long as each one has a pushrod that works with it's cup height, it would run just fine and most likely have no issues. It isn't the recommended course for the ultimate in power or longevity but as they say, smoke 'em if you got 'em....

Thanks for the replies guys. It will definitely be interesting to see how long it stays together. He is going to try to race it this weekend if he gets the motor and trans back in the car by Sunday.

Like everybody said, better to have the same. Make sure the push rod length is right & the rollers work smooth. The cam won't know the difference between brands.

Get this,, I was reading the book "WE were the Ramchargers" in it they state,,When building the Hemi for the "High and Mighty" they use roller lifters from a Harley-Davidson. Not that this has anything to do with anything,,Just interesting.

Thanks for the offer. I will see if he wants them and pm you for a price.
