One of the greatest rock guitarists ever. One of my car buddy's is a personal friend of Ronnie's and on several occasions had said that Ronnie is a perfectionist. Though I have enjoyed his music for many years I only saw him once at a small venue and the only comment I could make was he had total command of the instrument.

Take a few moments to remember some truly great music From Gamma and Montrose

Rest In Peace Ronnie

Damn! Rest in Peace,Mr. Montrose. I saw the band numerous times back in the 1970's and they always brought the house down. I always felt that "Rock The Nation","Get On Your Bad Motor Scooter...",and "Space Station #5" were the best back-to-back-to-back collection of rock songs ever put on an LP. Damn again.

On a slightly humorous note: Back in about 1986,I was heading up north (Michiganders understand) in my '85 Regal T-Type. Had the Montrose tape in the cassette player. Those three tunes started, and for some reason(!) my right foot went down. I was north of Higgins Lake, which is kind of a no-man's-land;nothing but old forest and suicidal deer and open road. 90 mph felt good!:nono: Until...a State officer was hiding off the road;I never saw him. When he asked me why I felt the need for speed,I told him: "Well...I'm going to blame the music...". He looked at me quizzically and asked "So...what were you listening to?". I turned on the car and "Space Station #5":headbang: came blaring out of the speakers. He(who was about my age) exclaimed "I love Montrose! What a great band!". After checking my license he came back, handed me my stuff, and said " Uh,I'm just giving you a warning this time. Though it's not a good reason to break the speed limit,I kind of understand. Now move along-AT LEGAL SPEED!". Which I did...

I then stuck in "Rare Earth Live",which, for me,is just as bad an influence in the speed department. Oh well...

Ronnie was not only 1 of the most under-rated guitar players this world has ever know, but he was also 1 of the most personible people you would hope to ever meet !
I had the very distinct pleasure of working with him and Montrose when they were opening for Dr.John the Night Tripper, back in the early mid 70's..and as with ALL touring personel, we would cross paths every year or so, at some festival in the middle of NO-Where...weither it be the UK, or Germany, Brazil or Belgium (last year)

RIP Ron... may your bus ride smooth, your amps fire up, and your Gitfiddle stay forever in tune..YOU are Terribly missed already !!!!!

Wasn't Ronnie Montrose also the Guitarist in Black Sabath also, with Ozzie... That seems to come to mind.... "I am Iron Man" by Black Sabath... for some reason I was thinking he played for "DR. HOOK" also, I'm not sure on that last one though... "I Got Stoned & I Missed It" by Dr. Hook

Budnicks;I don't recall Ronnie spending anytime with Sabbath. Tony Iommi has been their guitarist for a long time, even with the numerous personnel changes.

wow.... another legend gone.....very under rated guitarist. i have been a musician all my life ( bassist)...i never got to meet Ronnie Montrose but i did open up for Pat Travers back in '87, another under rated guitarist...another one is Alvin Lee.....wow...that boy can perform !

'bless you ronnie ...TURN IT UP !

Rest in Peace Ronnie, may your journey be sweet...

Haha, great story!

What a huge bummer, some legendary stuff and I am sure he will be missed by many.
Great story Al. I grew up going to my Godfathers place in Higgens Lake and that was a very different place in the `70s and `80s then it is now. Up north was a great place for speed, lots of long stretches of empty 2 lane. I remember being pretty young and watching the speedo on his `72 Satellite go up over 100mph one night on a stretch between Houghten Lake and Higgens Lake. Lucky there were no cops and even luckier there were no deer!
