I have a 1972 Dodge Charger, originally with a 318. It now has a Mopar Performance 408 stroker, 450 hp engine, automatic trani, with a holley 750 carb and electronic ignition. I am trying to set the idle RPM and fuel mixture. I DO have a tach, but i dont have a vacuum guage. I am trying to lean out the fuel mixture. I dont know what RPM i should set the engine too.

The car was killing when hot, at an idle. I leaned out the fuel mixture somewhat and the engine no longer dies. I want set the fuel mixture and rpm to the correct settings.

Does anyone know what the recommended RPM is for this engine?

Thank you,

Dave

mine settles in around 950rpm in gear,11-1200 in park.. but I have a pretty good sized cam
cam...but even at 950 Im only pulling 10 inches of vacum...is ur Holley 750 a 4 corner adjust 4150 style ?

I thought you just set it to when the engine isnt strugling - ie (not a rough shaking the engine idle)
Ill have to do the same eventually

Mine, in gear was 850...somtimes as high as 950.....I'd just go as low as possible with it still idling well and not trying to die...not too high that it chunks when engaging the trans

A modified engine will not have a recommended RPM "Idle".
Your comment " I want set the fuel mixture" is done through jet changes. The idle air bleed screw will only change the idle mixture. You can adj this by turning in equaly on both adj screws untill peak RPM / Vacuum is reached. Then turn them both back out untill you drop a couple hundred RPM.
