I've got the body ready to put on the rotisserie. My 66 Coronet 440 2dr HT has the usual amount of undercoating. Is it safe to sandblast the underside? I have heard of metal heating up and warping and I do not want that to happen. I do NOT have the money to pay somebody to media blast it for me. If I have to do more manual labor to get it done, such as needle scaler or scraping then that is what I will have to do. The car has been stripped to a shell, so the underside is bare.

Undercoat comes off very easy with a little torch heat and a scraper and/or wire brush. Blasting takes a big system. I'm renting an industrial blaster and compressor for $200 for 8 hours and/or a weekend. Do test blasting to make sure you don't warp exterior panels,.. under side, trunk, engine bay, etc. should blast ok.

Blasting undercoating is a waste of time. As mentioned, a heat gun and a putty knife is about the most efficient means and being on a roto, it's not a terrible job. Laying on your back and scraping overhead however......

You can blast it. But it will take for ever and waste lots of sand.

This work for me:

X2 -I agree with Prop ! ! I didn't believe it,but after spending 3 months scraping it with a putty knife, I finally bought one of these needle scalers . . . I finished the entire underside of my car from the axle back to the back ( it has the worse nooks and crannies then anyplace under the car ) and I finished it ALL in about 2-3 hours lying on my back. No hot undercoating dripping on me and burning me . . .

The tool is incredible - and it's very easy to use too. You can pick it up at HF for $30 - use their 20% off coupons and it's even cheaper. Go to youtube and search for it and watch the video of how easy it it to use . . . you're wasting your time with a putty knife and torch . . .

What's your opinion Donny?
I'd spend the $$ getting it blasted BUT...Logistics and $$ seem to be a concern for cairopd1069....

I used the needle scaler on the outside of the inner fenders, and yes it worked great. It is time consuming though so that is why I asked about sandblasting the underside. I will continue to use the needle scaler, thanks to those who responded with helpful suggestions.

You are getting good advice here, the needle scaler is the way to go! My blaster accomplished almost nothing on the undercoating of my 66. Needle scaler makes quick work of it then you can clean it up with the home blaster.

Are you doing it yourself? I wouldn't use sand to blast any part of a car. They make all kinds of other materials that are much cleaner than sand and don't generate the heat. I paid $800 to have the entire car done. Wheel wells, undercarriage, the whole shabang except the interior. Best $800 I ever spent.

Another good tool to use for scraping under coat is this from Home Depot. Use the flat blade. It can also be easily sharpened. Sears and Lowes also have there own version. Then you will also have another tool to use for projects around the house.
