Hi guys, I am wondering if there are any alternative devices to run for a scattershield maybe something that bolts on the stock bellhousing like they make for the autos or do you have to have a scattershield? This is what i found

could a guy run one of these inplace of a scattershield. The only reason i ask is I seen scattershield prices at 600 and just bolting on a cover would be a good cheap alternative if it works, what are you or your buddys running on your 4 speed bell housings for protection? thanks

boy I'm sure someone will give you an answer to this but every time I see or here a question like this I think of a 70 duster at mason dixon drag way around 1980 beautiful car got to the starting line had it reved around 4000 lights came down and the flywheel came out of it cut across the floor all but took off the drivers foot sawed threw the frame came out from under the car and went in the grand stand.that was not a good day at the track.I love 4speed cars wish I had one.good luck but think of your safety first......Artie

No the auto trans shield wouldn't be legal as a "clutch scatter shield", clutch cars with slicks need to have a "full steel {or stronger material} in circumference scatter shield, protection all the way around the flywheel/clutch", to contain it in the case of catastrophic failure, at least that's how I interpreted the rules... It's for your own safety, as you probably allready know or are finding out, "racing isn't cheap" & safety equipment isn't the best place to skimp on parts... Here's a nice photo below, of what a clutch &/or flywheel explosion can & will do, 1970 Don Garlits...

ok thanks for the info, i see a couple used ones on craiglist for not too bad prices, maybe i will look on there and find on. anyone have a used one for sale, anyone have any problems on mounting them up with no retrofitting or does it bolt right up.......thanks again....

Bill, they do make some pretty sticky drag radials.DOT approved tire, you shouldnt need a scatter shield.

I would definetly use a scatter shield...find a decent used Lakewood..you can find them used for anywhere @175 to 250 bucks..they come with a front flat plate that bolts to engine then install flywheel & then put bell housing on...I also have seen some catastrophic explosions ...scarey stuff there...I think Mancini sell adjustable dowel pins so you can ensure tranz input shaft runs straight & true with crank center (pilot bearing) also read somewhere they have a roller bearing that installs into the larger part in crank (for those input shafts people have cut the end off because their crank wasn't drilled for a 4 speed......just remember..safety 1st...oh ya...there is a specific amount of tooth flywheel you have to use with the lakewood bell housing...almost forgot...

As others have posted, if you want to race your car, street or strip, you need a scattershield. I too witnessed a 55 Chevy street car explode a flywheel back in the 60s. It missed his feet, but got his girlfriend's feet and legs, as it came up through the floor, dashboard and windshield. Ugly sight and a lot of pain and suffering to save some money. If you're going to drive your car with performance in mind, beg or borrow the funds to protect yourself from harm.
