Scrap Metal Recycling / Junk Removal Questions

Hey all - so, I'm cleaning out what's left of an old manufacturing plant on the family farm (plan is to turn this into the new garage!). Tons of scrap metal, but also just years and years of accumulated junk. Broken tools, oil bottles, tires, you name it. I don't think that I have the time / manpower to do this myself - do any of you have experience cleaning out big industrial spaces like this? I'd assume that all of the scrap metal would be valuable to a metal recycler, but don't know where to start.

Second question - out back, there is a 53' dry van trailer laying on its side (blown over by a recent storm - oof). Anybody know if metal scrappers will typically take stuff this big?

Yes don't pay anyone to take itmost scrapyards will come get it

I really depends on who or where the recycling company is, what state your in will make a difference too... It's a big industry here in Calif. with all the freaken' eco Nazis we have out here, I'm not sure how big it is in the Virginia area... Most cast iron, pot metal & regular steel doesn't have allot of value, but it does have some $$$ worth, it may help to offset some costs.... The prices are all over the place, it depends on where you live, supply & demand... Also scrap wood even has some value too, stainless steel has some good value also, when doing this type of demolition or clean up jobs, you "maybe" will be able to get them to haul off unwanted junk & debris to the land fill, if your not getting much "in return" for the metals or stuff that has some value to it... Also they usually wont haul off anything really big, unless it has a good scrap value, that will "exceed" the moving expenses/costs or you will have to pay partial costs... If the 53' Dry van/Trailer has aluminum, stainless steel, iron, steel or recyclable wood possibly, or parts value even.... I dealt with this kind of stuff somewhat, when rebuilding or tearing down old properties to build a new Automotive Dealership or remodel old Automotive dealerships or the old Industrial businesses converted to Automotive facilities, that had a ton of scraps & metal junk stored, over a couple decades... Some times, just an add to have people come & "pick" the property, might work too, see if someone wants the stuff & will haul it off, it could save you some money... In Calif. or Washington it was easy to get scrappers/recyclers to come & at least haul it off... But in New Mexico, Nevada, Kansas or Oklahoma etc., I had to pay, to have stuff/scrap hauled off usually, or pay for labor & trucks fuel etc. to haul it off myself & it was far cheaper to get a discount, for the scrap metal value & have someone else haul it off, in the long run, than pay labor & haul the stuff off myself... There are also auction companies that deal with this type stuff too, you may have to be/get creative, depends on what all is there, you may have some stuff, with real value too.... Good luck

Budnicks, thanks for the really informative message! jfreakofkorn, unfortunately there are no license plates (believe me, I looked for them!).

Theres alot of scrapmetal companies that have their own roll off boxes they will haul it for you and pay you for it where do you live in va .

Scrap steel is @ $180 a ton right now here in WI to give you a idea.

That's not bad at all, actually - thanks! mopwr, I live in Charlottesville, about an hour and a half west of you.

Get some friends together and tell them they can have the metal to sell. Tell them you'll take 10%. You'll have that place cleared out in a week.

I believe simms metal is in your area check your phone book for one i dont know what they pay around here but i believe metal prices dropped lately,
