only time you should need a sealant is if you are using pipe type fittings.most fuel fittings seal with a gasket or flare end.teflon tape if you need it for the pipe.
I recently contacted Mill-Rose about one of their products called Blue Monster. They told me their Blue Monster Teflon tape is resistant to gas and oil, as well as holding up to something like 20-25 psi. I tried it on a pipe threaded mechanical fuel pump and it worked great. I think it says to wrap a minimum of 3 times around. The only issue I might have had was not keeping the tape down on the threaded part. Thought I did, but found a very small piece in my clear fuel filter right after the pump, before the carb. It's sold several places, but I found mine at Menards.
As said above, it depends on the fitting type. The fitting into the bowl of your carb should be fine with the washer. If not, replace the nylon washer with a metal Holley washer. Can't tell on the brass fitting. If you take a picture of the inside of the larger fitting and the male end of the brass fitting we can help get you squared away the first time...
Tape gets into tiny passages and can be the kiss of death. Well, ticket to front row at a carburetor rebuild, anyway.
Copper gaskets are cheap.
When making the second fold on a flare fitting I leave a little bit of slack (don't tighten the tool all of the way down on the second step). That allows the coupling to fully compress the line's flare within the joint. That gives a really good seal on flare fittings.
