I take the car up the road 3-4 miles and when I start from a stop it seems fine but then shifting into 2nd it seems to start slipping, not really sure if it ever goes into 3rd.

Would the adjustment on the down shift cable have anything to do with this or not?

Transmission is a "66" rebuilt 727w/B&M flex plate, B&M shift kit, and a 3000 rpm stall converter.

Any comments how this should feel when it shifts?

I would check your "throttle pressure linkage" to see if it's applying the right amount of pressure. With the carb at WOT the arm on the trans should be all the way back without binding. If it's not the trans won't shift properly.

It should kick you in the *** when it shifts. No second or excessive slipping could be low fluid level or the kick down band adjustment is off. If the fluid is OK then check the front band adjustment (accessible from the outside). Having the throttle pressure disconnected will result in a rapid progression from 1st to 3rd and eventual tranny failure.

Damn it sucks to get old! I'm going to have to start leaving myself notes.

Last summer when the tranny was dripping by the speedometer gear and I replaced the o-ring I never topped off the fluid, so yes it was low. I did check it before hand but misread it on the stick.

It's all topped off and goes like a raped ape. Glad that's solved!

probably your clutches are going or are gone. could be a band adjustment also.it just happened to me in 1st gear.
