Working in my garage on the floor under my 1969 Satellite trying to fix gas gauge. It's not giving a correct reading on the dash. I ohmed out the tank and line and everythiing is grounded to the frame, I grounded the sending wire to the tank and the gauge went full right when I turned the key. So I'm thinking the newer sending unit needs adjustment in the tank. I have removed the gas line and also disconnected the battery. How do I get the sending unit out of the tank? Tank is new so there's no rust or dirt to deal with just don't want to start banging on anything until I talk to someone. So how do I remove it and is there an adjustment procedure? Not looking to get perfect but if I put in 10 gallons it only reads a 1/4 tank. Thanks

I'll be watching this thread since I have to do mine, same problem, mine goes to 3/4 when topped off and seems to go empty around 1/4 to 1/2 a tank. I believe the sending unit twist off lightly tap with a flat blade and small hammer the ring counter clockwise it should pop out, I do not think there are any adjustments on the sending unit it either works right or doesn't?

Yup, the retaining ring 'unscrews' and I like to use a blunted chisel and a light hammer to make it move. You can check the unit for ohms from empty to full and everything in between to see if it's putting out the right numbers once you have it out and you can also make sure the float is moving through the whole range freely.

You stated that you have 10 gallons in the tank. That is the amount I use to adjust the sending unit.

With the unit out of the car, hook up the sending unit wire, and run a ground wire to the body of the sending unit. Move the float to the low level position, then turn the ignition switch to the ACC position and check the gas gauge. It should read empty. Then move the float up against the full stop point of the sending unit. Check the gas gauge and it should read full. If these both read correctly, disconnect the wires from the sending unit, and then bend the float arm in the direction needed to get it to read 1/2 full. Insert the sending unit back in the tank and just install the lock ring finger tight. Hook up the wire to the sending unit and check the gauge to see if it reads 1/2 full. If it doesn't, remove the sending unit and tweek the float arm in the proper direction, and recheck until you are satisfied that it will read 1/2 full. My buddies and I have done this to 4 Mopars, because none of the new sending units read accurately.

Everything ohmed out fine and with a jumper wire attached I was able to get he gauge to move from empty to full when out of the car. Used a fuel line bending tool to tweak the pick up and also tweaked the float and I got a much better reading. I'll probably need to run it out of gas to see how accurate it is but it's definitely better. Thanks for the help on this!
