guys, have a 493 stroker with 871 bds blower, scat rods and crank, hardland sharp rockers, eddy heads, girdle ect.. what max rpm would you run? it keeps making power as far as you will take it. just wondering what I should put in for a rev limiter pill, probably going to shift at 5800 normally but wondering what is the "top end" rpm she can safely handle?
dana with 3.54 and a 727

I imagine if it is balanced right and such 6500, but also if you had it dynoed. I have found best shift point for racing is about 1000 rpms above peak torque.

ok thanks, my dyno sheet shows max torque was made at 3800 but I think that's cuz the load was put on engine at that time, torque keep going up to about 850 and stalls right there until 5k and then starts dropping so I think 6k shift is my anwser

A good question would be:
On your Dyno Sheet what RPM was the maximum horsepower made at ?
I would think there would be no point to take it much past that...If you are "drag racing" it for lowest ET possible then you would try different shift points at, or after, the RPM where it made the most HP on the Dyno.
You say "it keeps making power as far as you will take it"....don't really know what you mean by that.

My 498 made best power at 5400....it was a waste of time and rpm to take it higher....I wouldn't go over 6000 again......again by meaning I snapped my cam in half at 6000+

We've run two blown 440's the first one was stock heads, trw pistons, eagle rods. Ran 5.90's@119 in the 1/8 shifting at 5000 rpm. The 2nd motor has better pistons, eagle rods, stage 4 iron heads. Runs 5.60's@123 in the 1/8 shifting at 6000. Both in a 2900lb 68 GTX. Thats plenty of rpm. Even my Mega block, aluminum rod, .800" lift cam, 572 only turns to 7000. Makes around 900hp. At 8500 the only tools you'll need are dust pan, broom, and a bag of floor dry.
