Just some general questions about shipping a motor to a shop for rebuilding, for those who have done it please.
  • I'm assuming motor needs to be on a pallet. Did you box up the motor? With wood? Or card board for protection?
  • Any preferred freight companies to use? Assuming truck should have a lift gate on it?
  • Rough idea on shipping cost? No idea what a full motor weighs. Assuming 600lbs? Looking at a map, looks like 5/6 states will be travelled through one way.
Anything I'm missing?
TIA!!

440 700-800lbs

Last one I shipped I used 4 x 4 blocks(attached) in the center of a wood pallet. To protect the pan and strapped it to the pallet, made a frame and covered with cardboard.

As far as lift gate depends on the receiver but typically you have to get a lift gate...Just call and ask whom is receiving it...

I don't have a preferred carrier to recommend but I used UPS and it was around 700 bucks....about 4-5 years ago

All good info as stated above but I went with Fastenal for shipping. Contact them for more info.

Fastenal for the last one I sent. No issues.

Either way. Standing on the end is the way my engine builder ships them back.
Except on a better pallet than mine.
I used what I had. Makes the footprint smaller.
My engine builder for this build contracted the shipping from my driveway and back.
His price was very good.
Are you sending one for to a builder?
Contact them. They may get deals unavailable to the occasional shipper.

If you can mount it on a skid and get it to Fastenall,it's least expensive way to ship anything large or heavy.

Will have to have Fastenal LTL come to my house and pick it up. And the motor will have to be shipped on its engine cradle.

You need to mount that on a skid and strap it down. Then put it in a pick up or a flat bed and bring it to them. They do not pick up,but most store have a fork lift to get it out of the track or you bring it with.
They only do store to store shipping.

I'll chime in a bit but I would start by asking how the shop you are sending it to prefers to receive it and if they have any restrictions/requirements. You want it to be delivered as smoothly as possible on their side.

I use a std 48x48 pallet and bolt it down supported under the pan rails. Then I box it up using 1/4" plywood and 2x3s. I don't like to leave a anything identifying it as an engine and I want it to be easy to grab with a pallet jack or forklift. Last time I ship using Forward Air and they were great. I haven't heard of shipping through Fastenall but that would be a good option too.

Yea, I need to get that engine cradle bolted to the pallet. Got plenty of plywood and 2x4s that have been looking for a project. In talks now with Jim about shipping and stuff.

Any other recommendations for shipping companies for shipping an entire motor please? So far, it's Fastenal and Forward Air.

I would box it up well, where it won`t be messed with . make sure a forklift or pallet jack will work w/ ease. sturdy-sturdy too.

Just a question but "where are you shipping it to"?
