Shock absorber tool

Has anyone had any experience with any of the shock absorber tools? I don't want to resort to vise grips unless I have to, but I've never tried these. Any thoughts, good or bad? Thanks.

To hold the front upper stud? I just use a closed end wrench that fits snug.

Yup. I tried a small wrench but it doesn't want to hold the stud very well.

I've had good luck by just holding the shock with one hand and tightening/loosening the shock with an air ratchet with my other hand. Of course, a second set of hands makes it easier.

Also note, most shocks these days only have two flats on them, not a hex for that tool to work for you. EDIT.. I SEE THAT HEX IS ONLY THE HOLDER for the D shaped insert.

Back in the day when I was working as an auto mechanic I used these Snap on shock stud spinners. They engage the flat spots on top of the shock stud and simply hold the nut with a box wrench. For fast production work it turned it into a one-man job

Yeah, and they are only 1/4" I believe, so not much holding power if the stud is rusty. I've always been able to get the off with an open end wrench however.

MAC also made them, Pops bought this one shortly after getting his '66 coronet in 1968. I think I've used it with a 3/8" butterfly impact more than once.

Are you talking about removing and installing the front shock top nut? If you are trying to remove it just use a 1/2" drive 9/16 deep well socket and a 24" extension. Place the socket with extension on the nut, rock the extention as far in one direction as you can forcing it to bend the shaft right below the nut. Do this back and forth several times and it will break off. If installing it and you have a compressor and 1/2" drive impact gun use the same setup and hold the gun trigger down until the nut tightens up. If it won't tighten as far as it should hold the top of the stud with what ever open end wrench will fit or a crescent wrench and finish tightening the nut with the box end of a 9/16 wrench.

That should work. I did a quick search on ebay, but no dice. I'll have to head over to Summit (since they're only about 40 from me).
