I need about 3/8" more clearance for my electric fan housing to clear, would it be a big deal if I cut the stub end off my Milodon water pump shaft?

If I do that, and replace the bolts sticking out with counter sunk heads that will give me enough room to clear my electric fan housing. I can also trim back the housing a bit to give me some additional clearance.

Thoughts?

yes you can grind it down, but you wont ever go back to a mechanical fan as it uses that extra bit to help center itself.

Or locate a pulley with less offset and push the flange on further then cut end off

you can, just be careful how you cut it.overheat, ruins the seal.too much vib can mess up the bearing.i6206.jpgdid mine with twin fans.goes right between em.

Keep just enough of the stub to fit through the pulley hole to aid in centering the pulley. I like bm02tj's suggestion; the pulley flange might be pressed on a bit further to match a shorter pulley. Of course, every water pump you get in the future will need to be modded in the same way....and the next owner will curse you for using some GD oddball water pump!

I chopped it and installed countersunk bolts. Turned out great.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions!

Ha! Funny you should say that - It's embarrassing to say, but it only took me 3 trips and 2 measurements to get the right length alternator belt!

Actually 2 trips, on the second trip I sent my 17 year old kid into town, I bribed him by letting him drive my new pickup, with an inkling of fear... it returned home unscathed, only to have a belt too large that time!

I started out with a 46.5" - too small, then 50" - too big, then the magic 48.375" did the trick! haha

I take pics of everything, these really are the right ones...

hey , don't feel bad , ive spent like 30 bucks at rock auto trying to get the right ones but they kept sending me the wrong ones. I ended up with one PS belt that worked and I am reusing my alt belt, but I want two that match.
