Car is being used for street use, little or no racing and I am wondering if I should strip all of the under coating off. Lots of work and very time consuming but not sure if its worth the effort.

Speaking from recent experience I can tell you that it really is a crap load of work and if you start you pretty much have to do it all. (at least I did) I really hope that I never have to do it again in this lifetime. That being said, I'm glad we did it and probably removed over 100# from the car. Seriously, it was several 5 gallon pails worth. Now my undercarriage is pristine and painted which is really nice to deal with.

I removed all the undercoat from a race car I built. It took awhile, and I used a heat gun in some places, other places I got lucky and it almost fell off as I scraped it.
Depends on how ambitious you are. One question, if your going to use the car for the street why bother?

In my opinion if the undercoats in good shape I would leave it on. It`s a good sound deadener which is nice for a steet car. But if its peeling or flaking in places and rust could be forming underneath I would take it off. Just my 2 cents.

Its not falling off so its still in good shape. As I said before, it not going to be used as a race car so the weight doesn't bother me. I have plenty of other things to do on it and removing the under coating would be a long term job. Its staying on.....

I agree......Plus the undercoating is going to keep all the seams sealed up well and take a rock or debris hit better than a painted surface, thus possibly opening up a chip down to metal and letting rust begin.

Wise choice!!:idea1:

It can weigh up to 100 lbs. which is a lot when you are racing competitively.

For a street car I would definately leave it on there. It was not intended as rust proofing from the factory but rather as insulation from road noise. You will especially notice the difference on a gravel road with the rocks bouncing off the bottom of the car that you will never hear with an undercoated car. The are definately quiter.
