how would you know if its a hi po block? thanks

If it were an HP engine it would have the HP stamp on the machined pad to the right of the distributor.

383 blocks of that vintage are the same, whether they are 2bbl engines or 4bbl engines. The HP stamping really designates that the short block was built with higher compression pistons and a different camshaft from the factory. After 45 years, with an average 10,000 miles per year, the only way to tell what is in the block, is to look. Things have likely been changed.

I think the OP's question is is there such an animal as an "HP" block prior to 1968.

For 67 the difference was 2 bbl and 4 bbl, each wit hdifferent compression, cam etc.

For 66, only the 10:1 4 bbl 383 was available in a B body.

IIRC, in 68 a non-HP 4 bbl was available, but the "HP" stamped block had tha 5 "extra" horsepower.

I doubt the 66 block has any stampings (but I'll check mine).
