I havea 68 Road Runner with a 727 that I rebuilt about 1 year and 2,000 miles ago. It is now having problems. I have noted the fluid totaly fouled with aluminum and the trans wouls not shift into any gear when hot. It was flushed and found that the fluid was like sludge in the bottom of hte pan. I had the trans flushed and it worked fine for about 300 more miles. NOw it will slip out of 1st and 2nd under normal driving condiditons and the fluid is black, and full of aluminum again. I pulled the trans out and pulled the converter and found that it was coing apart inside. The is an aluminum ring of some sorret that I pulled from the nose of the converter and it was all chewed up and the inside impeller is bouncing around inside the converter case. I pulled the clutch packs aout and found the front clutch steels and fictions fairly worn and the back clutch parts almost like new. I fear I may have missed some thing when I built the trans up. DO any on you guys know of a good tranny shop in Sacramento California area that could rebuild this thing up for street strip action. I built it with a B&M kit that had all of the clutch parts and bands ans put all of the B&M kit goodies in it. Can anyone help?

727 info

you talk about the clutch packs, but how about the front pump? you have to take it out to get to the clutch packs. that is what the torque converter hooks to, sound like front bushing. how does the slot in the torque converter look like? that is what goes into the pump. it is not so uncommon for the converter to rattle when off the trans. the inner impeller is supported on the splined shaft sticking out of the transmission.
sorry, but it doesnt sound good, it almost sound like the converter was not on the pump tang, and just pressure (friction) was turning the pump, now the metal is gone and no friction, no mechanical conection.
hope this stirs some thinking.

Lets try again

Got the 727 in my Road Rumnner back in and it works great now. The problem was that the POS "Boss Hog" Torque converter took a major SHI... and shot metal thropugh the trans. I ABSOLUTLEY DO NOT RECOMMEND These Torque COnverters, THEY ARE JUNK. I had less that 2000 miles on one and it totally came apart. The Planet gears and shaft holder were totally ruined by the metal coming in on the bearing and cuased it to wad up as well. Then the metal in the fluid gummed up the valves and caused the clutch packs to burn up. Now it launchs stong and shifts smooth. I have to learn how to drive in again with otu breaking the tires loose. IF I punch it at a light it will leave a huge burn out, lots of fun, but the cops frown on that sort of stuff.
