Hi all

I have a '68 Charger with a 440 4brl. I have bought a six pack setup from Mopar to install and am wondering if I should change the cam at the same time. If so, which do I use. The engine is a '73 with 9.5:1 comp. pistons, factory headers, electronic ignition and a "1 up from stock cam" as I was told by the person I bought the car from. There are so many combinations! This is not a race car but a cruiser. It has to be street friendly (while also being loud and mean). Future plans to swap the auto 3 spd for a 4 sp. Don't know if that makes any difference..

Help Please!

Mopar Muscle magazine just did an article on changing your 4 barrel to a six pack. I think it was last months issue,

Without knowing what you got makes it hard to plan around. You can check the vacuum at idle, check compression pressure and note if it has a rough idle. Normal vacuum readings around 15-18 in HG at idle indicates a stock type cam. Compression pressure in the 150 - 160 range with a mild cam may very well be around 9.0:1 CR. A six pack with a factory style intake should work fine in this environment. You of course could optimize your engine by selecting a cam of some known quantity and verifying the actual CR.

I did this back in 1969 with a 440/375 and it ran well. Ball bearing progressive-type linkage was key in making me happy with the response, but I had a 4 speed car with headers and a 4.10 Dana. Not needed so much with an automatic. Your '73 motor will be fine with it as is if you wish.
Good luck!
