Sloppy automatic shifter

I hope everyone had a great 4th with all this "stuff" going on. I've just been trolling around and reading posts.

My stock floor shifter is really sloppy. I have to give it an extra pop to get it in drive. Before I go all out and buy stuff I don't need what's the best parts to replace to tighten it up?
 
Try adjusting the linkage. Get under the car, take the linkage rod clip out, put the shifter in neutral, lift the rod out of the shift arm, feel how it is, move the shifter to 1, pull the shift arm back till it clicks into the 1 position, see if the rod drops in smoothly. Then do the same for reverse. Adjust the linkage rod position as needed. The feel of the shifter itself will be "sloppy". Point is get the linkage adjusted.
 
In addition to what 66 mentioned, if it still feels sloppy, and you feel like pulling the vb, check for play in the shift shaft that attaches to the rooster comb, as well as wear in the bore that houses the detent ball.
 
Ok, the cotter pins and washers were pretty rusted and worn. Took them out and replaced with thicker washers and pins. That tightened things up a bit. The plastic bushing/inserts look worn too. I'll order those.
 
Check the shifter housing for cracks too (if it is anything like the b body shifter). I had to weld mine back up. And the plastic bushings I replaced with door pin bronze bushings. The size was almost perfect.

I will check that, thanks. It's a center console car. I'm sure all the bushings are worn.
