Small leak at Valve Cover breather.

This thing is scary because I can smell the oil hit the header occasionally when I'm driving. I seem to get a gas smell in the passenger area after a good acceleration. I do need plugs on my firewall, so I'm ordering those up.

The other valve cover has a new PCV valve, seems to be working ok (Hasn't popped out like the old one used to, bad grommet)

Anyway, any ideas? SHould I run a breather with a blowoff tube, into a catch can or something?

I don't want oil dripping on to my headers. Pretty sure that's dangerous.

most aftermarket breathers come with a grommet that looks like a shot glass.get a new one and instead of cutting it off,cut a small window into the side of it.install it with the window facing the exh manifold and no more oil should get into your breather.only thing to watch for is any part of the valve train that could hit your longer grommet.

i used these baffled grommets, they have 2 steps inside the grommet so when oil hits them it hits the step and drips back down instead of coming up through the breather, but still lets it breathe.

i use K&n breathers instead of pcv's

but i drilled my holes in my covers, you can either find the right size for the original hole or you may have to drill the hole a bit bigger if it is too small
 
Just a quick question. Have you checked for blow by? if you have a lot of blow by oil will come out the breather no matter what you do. Pull the breather and start the engine and see if you get a lot of air flow out of it

If your PCV valve is functioning correctly air should be drawn IN through your breather. Is your valve cover baffled under the breather location? The PCV system, used correctly, will keep the top of your motor a lot cleaner, as any 'blow by' will be drawn back into the intake manifold. This assumes that the motor is in pretty good condition...
 
The motor was freshly rebuilt, and just now broken in. Of course, that doesn't mean anything.

Not sure about the baffle in the valve cover. Damn.

Guess I need to learn more about oil blow by. Going to look for a thread here. Thanks again! If someone has a good thread handy, I'd appreciate it. Sometimes search here is tough.

you can tell if you have a baffle by pulling the breather.if there is a small metal plate under it,it has one.if you can see strait through to the rockers it dosnt.(inside the valve cover)

Even a new engine will have some blow by. But if it is excessive then there is a problem and doing a compression test is the way to check for proper ring seat-age.
