Wondering what spark plugs guys are using these days. I have been happy with Autolite 85 in my 440. I want to replace them, any thoughts? '71 GTX 440,Rebuilt Stock ,Chry.Elc.Ignition (orange box) standard factory.coil.
Bosch,Accell or stick with Autolite 85.Thanks

Gentlemen,
Spark plug usage is subjective....
Champions are best vs Champions are horrible vs ACs are great vs ACs are poor, vs NGKs are the best vs NGKs are lousy, vs Autolites are good vs Autolites are terrible, or any combinstion of the above, etc.
The most subjective opinion will come from the next door's neighnor's brother in law's cousin's buddy who drives a Chevy who's only is concerned about what wax to use this week. The only real opinion is the owner and how well his/her car is performing...... remember "Mom loves me best " rule may apply?

I've only run Champions for the last 30 yrs. Your Autolites are good too.

Well, you can call it subjective if you like, but for me, my experience makes it objective. :) I helped a friend replace a timing chain and do a tuneup on a Superbird, and afterwards it wouldn't start. We tore the whole front of the engine apart, again, to check the chain and it was fine. Then The Old Guy at the base hobby shop asked what was happening, and the first thing he asked was "Are you using Champion plugs?" We said yes, he said that was our problem, and he was right. We pulled the plugs and they looked fine, but if you put a little pressure on them you could see four of the eight had cracked insulators. We bought another set and two of them were cracked.

I didn't buy another Champion for over 20 years, and finally had to as my parts store didn't have any other brand I could use. I put them in my Crown Vic, and it ran like crap. I pulled the plugs, and two of the eight were cracked. I've never bought a Champion since.

You want to gamble with your money, buy all the Champions you like. Me, I'll stick with Autolite. I've been buying them for 30 years and no cracks yet. :)

Champions are not on my short list, Due to issues I had decades ago.

Likely, i have just as much if not more experience as you and my dealing with Champions are diametrically opposed to yours. Does that fact make your opinion better than my opinion? I think not.
Perhaps your noted experience should be traced to the person that installed the plugs in the first place.....were the plugs examined for physical damage b4 installation, were they lightened to the recommended torque value? There are many different factors that could have csused the insulator to crack.
Which type of Autolite plugs did you install (type number)..shiielded or not or protected nose or electrode configuration or alloy.
Which brand or configuration of spark plug is subjective...just like car brand, color, wax, coffee or tea, brand of beer, etc. Its up to the consumer and their own preferences...that's what subjective means.

Bob R.

Thanks for getting back to the original question.

My 2 cents: I agree, Autolites are very good plug. They will work fine for a stock engine , I have installed original Mopar Champion P34 in my 318 they work beautifully, good color and no fouling, they were purchased from E Bay, a NOS set for 35.00. with only 12oo miles a year driven I think I will never replace them again, I will only check them once a year for engine running health.

It's simple. Does every Champion plug have defects? No. Was every plug I've used over the course of 30+ years that was defective a Champion? Yes. Simple risk mitigation plan is: Don't use Champions. :)

Bruzilla,
If you perform actual statistical stamping, you will then develop a normal bell shaped distribution curve of the population sampled. Risk mitagation is usually biased on actuary tables and time weighted averaging. Perhaps if you performed a multiple regression analysis of your data, rather than risk migation, which is usually skewed in favor the insurance underwriter, a more clear understanding would be developed. To this end, you have your opinion and i have mine...and I'm sure you have heard the old adage about opinions....and leave it go at that....
