In a van, down by the river,
I am leaving the factory am radio & 8 track in my 69 RR. I ordered some repop speakers, but I was wondering if the old radio would sound right threw them. I have a three speaker dash. the new center speaker has two small speakers side by side. Is there some one who rebuilds these old speakers to stock? I want to put my dash back in, but don't want to have to redo these after it's in. P.S. the new speakers have great big magnets. How does this effect stuff. I am really dumb when it comes to sound systems.

Why wouldn't you just put in a stock size modern speaker? The AM radio is still going to provide you with as terrible of sound quality as you want.

I know the sound won't be any better than it was in 1969, but I don't want to make it worse. I never listen to the radio anyway. I'm thinking if someone rebuilds the old ones like new, then they plug in the way they did.

This guy is local to me. http://wesleyaudio.com/ He is really good. I had him rebuild an old Ampeg guitar amplifier for me years ago and he rebuilt the original Jensen speaker and it sounded great when he got done. I never even knew speakers could be rebuilt before he offered to. He actually builds his own brand tube type guitar amps from sctatch. Really talented guy. I am sure he could do it.

If you go the aftermarket route, keep this in mind. I think the OEM AM radios produced only a few watts per channel, so when choosing aftermarket speakers, you should match them pretty close. Buying 200 watt speakers and driving them with only a few watts will cause the radio amp to start clipping as it struggles to drive those speakers. it will sound terrible and will eventually destroy the voice coils in the speakers and even fry the amp in the radio.

While I cannot comment on the fidelity of your old AM system, I wanted to just warn you about the magnet size with the center speaker. When I purchased my'69 R/R, I found that the radio wouldn't fit properly in the dash. Part of this was due to the aftermarket speaker magnet being too large and interfering with the radio housing as well as hitting the heat/defrost control plate. I ended up going to S & M Electro-Tech (www.turnswitch.com) for a correct replacement center speaker. They also offer the smaller dash speakers too although I never bothered to replace mine (it too was an 8 track car but was w/o the 8 track and speakers). Just thought it may help you. Cheers!

That's a good point Funship...I went with a dual speaker template and two Polk Audio 110watt speakers to replace the rotton, blown 2 watt speaker the factory had in my '69RR. Needless to say the factory AM radio will not be powering them, but still will be retained in the factory location. I did not have any problem with the radio interfering with the magnets as far as fit, but had to shield the factory tach because the magnets were pulling the needle over. Just throwing it out there.

I just bought a replacement center dash speaker from Electro-Tech for my rebuilt AM thumbwheel radio. Phone orders only because he wants to make sure you get what you need and that it fits your car. I got the speaker in 2 days of the order at $39 + $10 for shipping. It's a quality item and packed well. Make sure you get the 8 ohm speaker if your radio has NOT been upgraded to a modern unit.

I bought my radio from a real nice man named Devin Duke on his Ebay store Devinism. Nicely done, too.

I have an original AM radio and speaker that still works. Pay for the shipping and you can have it. Its not in pefect shape but the speaker works.

Honestly, I surprised by S&M! The guys were friendly and I was amazed by the speed with which the speaker arrived and the quality of it. Plus it was nice to just install it and "voila'" everything FIT like it was suppose to. No more d*cking around with ill fitting items. I know I may talk to them in the future about converting my radio (it was a A Body radio converted to fit..I swear the PO's) to AM/FM at some point.

Those must be 3.5" speakers Prop? I used some 4" Kenwoods, and had to do some modifying for the heater control.

Yes sir....3.5" Pretty sure that's how Polk signify's the Model #.....Those are 350's, so 3.5". 4" would be 400 series. These were pretty snug with the heater control cables. I imagine 4" would be real close.

You bet....I ended up having to order a type of really thin metal magnetic shielding foil to block the lines of flux pulling the needle on the tach over.

Talked with S&M electro tech, they are out of the center speakers. They will have some soon, they said they would give me a buzz. Said they will sound like New, as in 1969. Can't wait to hear them, anyone have some 8 tracks for sale? CCR, Led Zeplen, Stones, would be nice. Also like ZZ top, but they might be too late for 8 track time?

Use to pick up 8 tracks up at goodwill.....like a dime a piece. Had a Lincoln winter beater with a Premium "Quadrasonic" 8 Track system in it...lol. Most Chic's don't dig Don Ho and Anne Murray.

Yea I hear us prop, so far I've scored a Paul Simon & a Marie Osmond. Whopee!

LOL! That's pretty rough......Listening to that, people wouldn't know weather to start making things out of beads or start a Doll collection.
