My speedo worked for a while, although at first it would bounce and then straighten out...eventually it stopped working, and the guy who installed my engine (been a tech for about 50 years) and very reputable in Ocean County told me it's not the speedo cable, it's the speedometer.

Any other advice, recommendations?

Disconnect the cable from the speedometer. There'll be enough of the female plug stickin out for you to spin with your finger. Spin it and if the speedometer needle moves, the speedometer is good.

IF it ends up being the speedometer I have used Dicks several times for speedometers and tachs and he always does a great job. Of course you can probably find someone local to you to do the work.

My speedo did the samething a few years back. Ended up just being a loose connection, tightend up the ends and all has been good for 3 years.

Mine is broke too, just not a priority right now. Let us know what you find.

Been there... I found on one car the cable was a bit short and the other it just needed to be tightend up a bit.

Usually the cable binding up, did you try disconnecting at both ends and spinning it?
Might need to pull the cable out of the housing and clean both and re lube.

Sometimes crud gets into the actual Speedo gears. Air in a can, with some sewing machine oil can help. I had to do that 3 times on my problem one, the gum that came out was unreal.

thanks guys...will give it a try! let you know how it makes out

I've just been going through this with my 72 SSP and a customers 72 RR amoung other 71/4B's. Problem is that the greese gets dried out. These speedos have nylon gears that start to bind causing the speedo to chatter. I have takin a couple apart which is a pain to get back together. Real small rivets and such. I found that you can spary some lube down into the gears without dis-assembling the speedo but you do have to remove it from the cluster. This has seemed to work well from me.
