Hi, my 440 wants to stall out and die anytime I put it in gear or come to a stop. Idles fine and runs decent down the road but I have to drive with one foot on the gas at all times to keep it running. anybody got any ideas? I have and edlebrock carb and intake and converted to a standard electronic ignition.

Adjust your idle up first, to see if that helps.

Your timing may be need to advanced or you have a vacuum leak around your carb or line going to your distributor. Maybe sucking air and not advancing when you but it in gear.

Could be others, but start there..

well no luck so far. I've adjusted the idle and advanced the timing. used some carb cleaner to check for vacuum leak but did not find one. I plan on driving it and advancing the timing a little more and see what happens. Who knew a 43 old car would be so stuborn!!!

Sounds like a vacuum leak; does it happen when you apply the breaks or anytime? Does it happen when brake are applied when in park? If so may be booster; if you have one.

Also could be a wire; when going into gear or braking the engine could be moving and causing a short or wire to lose contact. The wire thing has happened to me before; coil wires.

also could be fuel leaking in the carb and it can't handle it at idle, have had that happen before, Maybe float sticking open

Most likely a carb. I had the same problem with a 64 318 auto.... ran good down the road... idled decent in nutural.... then would shudder and shake at idle in gear. I changed carbs, (2bbl), with an identical, known good carb and the problem went away....

I currently have a 650 Edlebrock on there, Could that carb be to small? Engine is stock except for edlebrock intake and a mild Crower cam.

its in your air mixture screws in front of the carb. turn them all the way in and back them out 2 turns. then start car and turn out and get it where your idle starts to peak out, you may have to go in or out but you want max rpm through your air mixture screws.
i had to do the same on my race car yesterday when i swapped out my carbs, mine would also die in gear. my guess is yours are turned in too far. keep me posted.

mixture balance screws...

A rule of thumb when performing this procedure is to always make your last adjustment turning the screw IN..... This preloads the tention spring and will prevent the screw from turning out on it's own.

Thanks for all the advice. I will start adjusting the carb ASAP. I also I took the carb apart and both float sides are full of fuel. How full is too full?
