I tried installing my standard OEM starter on my 72 Road Runner GTX last night. The car has Headman Long tube headers. Is it possible to install the standard OEM starter without pulling the headers, torsion bars, and steering column? If so, how is the best route to go about doing it. If it can't be done, will a mini torque starter work? If a mini starter works, what brand do you guys use? Thanks

I had Hedmans on the old 440 that was in my 63 and I used the PowerMaster mini starter. I installed it when putting the eng in but I dont think it would come out without taking the header loose. Ron

I used Hedmans (I will never use hedmans again) on my 66 with a 440 and there was no way an oem starter would fit. I bought my mini starter from Bouchillon but I suspect any mini starter will work. My understanding is a late mopar starter from a magnum 360 or 318 uses a factory mini starter that will work on a 440. This can be bought from a local Auto parts store.

Thanks everyone for the help. I ordered a mini starter. Is Headman a bad header?

Its funny I JUST did this last weekend because the oem starter was shot. Though I have a 383 with the long tube headers in 74 Charger.

I jacked the front of the car up as high as I could and put on stands, completely undid the header dropped the collector end down and pushed the #1 end upwards so that the OEM starter butt (heavy) end would have enough room to push up and the nose out of the trans bell then straight down and fiddled out.

Hope that helps, I did have a hand doing it to help save on much swearing.

I replaced it with a mini starter from a 90's Dakota and it fits and works perfectly!
