Hi Dont know if anyone can help me figure out what is going wrong.
I have a recently purchased 68 Charger, Engine appears to be a 69. Motor ID Pad is stamped E440 HP I can get further details if this is not enough.
When I bought it, the car was not running. When turning the key the starter motor would spin but not engage. I took out the original starter and it was mounted flush to the engine the gear wheel seemed shot spun freely in both directions.
I went to the local autozone and got a replacement starter Duralast DH3257 I was working in a tight space and couldnt get it in flush to the motor called Duralast and they said I needed their DH3258. Pulled out the first replacement starter and put this one in I made more space by putting the car on ramps got the starter in what I believe to be straight its snug up to the motor and looks right but I am an amateur ;).
I turn the key and I get 1 click it doesnt engage or turn the flywheel.
I took the fan shroud off put an 1" 1/4 socket on the engine and turn it clockwise without a lot of effort and hear the air/compression (did this for a couple of turns of the wrench) so it seems to move freely.
I then took and put a new power lead from the battery to the starter and replaced the accessory wire onto the new power lead and same issue 1 click the alternator gauge goes to 0 and no turning of the motor.
Its a brand new battery supposedly with high ColdCrankingAmps. I hooked up the battery with jumpers to my truck same problem.
I took a wrench and jumped the battery and accessory lead and still no engage it just sort of pings instead of the 1 click it sounds like it tries to engage or extend, then stops for 1sec(or less) and then tries again, until I remove the jumper.
So I am confused to what gives here.
There is a thin peice of sheet metal on the Leftside of the hole the starter goes into (seems to be some sort of heat/dust sheild) I dont know if thats holding anything up. The teeth on the flywheel seem fine I didnt see anything chewed up. I can turn the motor on the crank bolt easily. The battery is new, the starter is new. Or if the starter gear is just not appropriate for the flywheel or did I just install it wrong. Or is there just a better starter I should work with to start?
Any ideas help or anything is Greatly appreciated.
Dazed and Confused.
