I just bought this 64 Sport Fury 383, 496 Stroker, four gear and I have a problem with the starter! It starts find when cold but when it gets hot it won't! The header is tight against the starter! It has Doug headers on it which Summit says there is no headers listed to fit this car! It now has a starter on from a 92 Dakota! Any ideas?

Headers are a headache for street cars. The heat on the starter is your problem. I put a 440 in my 71 Cuda with headers and had the same problem. I went to stock manifolds and no more heat soaked starter. I put a crate Gen2 Hemi in place of the 440 and used the stock hemi manifolds and never had a problem. I expect a lot of people who never had a problem to chime in, but I'm totally satisfied with stock Cast Iron manifolds.

I've started to agree that headers on a street car are a PITA! I'm in the process of changing a starter on my Roadrunner that has headers and am really thinking of going with stock manifolds this winter. Even with good fitting TTI headers and a mini starter it's just too much for me anymore. Street driven cars are fine with stock manifolds and really don't need headers. Just have to get that racing mindset out of my head! ruffcut

Heat soak is a definite issue. I have the same problem and just know that I need to be able to sit for a while and let it cool before moving on. That’s with 2 batteries in parrallel

I have Doug's 452 headers on my 440 in a '62 Dodge. They fit great and I'm sure nobody will list them for a '62. If that's what you have it shouldn't be a problem.

As far as the starter, I'm using the Dakota mini starter also and have never had a problem starting it when hot. I haven't even noticed any laboring when starting hot.

It could be the starter is failing. Could also be timing. Might throw a light on it and see if it's too far advanced. Checking battery cables and ground would be a good idea also.

Beautiful '64 drop top

My 65 Coronet 383 has Doug's headers and a OEM starter. It was a pain but it did fit. Next one will be some type of Mini starter?

One of the things to watch on Mini starter is the Positive battery wire stud on the starter is real close to touching the block, It was too close for
me. Not sure on the smaller starter I had but I think it was a Dakota starter.

So far no heat issue with mine .... but I have very low miles on it.

I've been using mini starters for years. One on my 63 has been on for over 20 years now with no problems. The one on my Roadrunner is 4 years old and didn't sound right from the start. Upon inspection, looks like it wasn't engaging fully as evidenced by the wear marks on the drive gear. Just luck of the draw, I guess. ruffcut
