how R U all doin? hope your projects R going well, quick question Im gonna be firing up my 440 engine to see how she runs, U have all given me much appreciated advice, some of u recomended that i use a bellhousing and a flywheel,I have a tf 727 trans that is going in the car would i be able to bolt that to the engine to start it instead of the flywheel? I have my torque converter already, ive seen people do it but im not sure if it will cause any damage to the auto trans any input would help, thanks again to all of u,and thanks for your apprecited help, ill get some pics on here soon!

It should work fine but just remember to have fluid in the trans. You may want to start and run it in neutral so the pump can circulate fluid.

Quick tip: Put the converter in the tranny first and make sure it's engaged with the pump then bolt the trans up to the block, being careful to not let the converter slide out during the process. When it's all bolted up slide the converter up to the flex plate and rotate until the holes line up. You may want to verify the fitup of the flex plate bolt pattern to the converter before you go too far.

Thanks again!

you guys are a big help, hopefully this beast runs right, and if not im looking at doing a rebuild which i will definently need all your expertise to guide me along the way always grateful for your input!

Oh yeah, that engine oil pump thingy :tongueflap:

The reason I say that is I ALWAYS prime the oil pumps on ALL the engines I start.

My neighbor just started a 454 that he built for his Chevelle last week and did NOT prime the pump, I suggested it and he said he never heard of it "It's a Chevrolet, It's tough, It will be Fine". what a Moron ! :edgy:

I snickered and walked away, I wonder how much engine damage he did at start up ?

Oh, I agree. Minimum you should crank it over without the plugs until you move some oil. Sounds like that 454 has 10,000 miles on it right out of the gate

I would not run it with the trans. Yo are firing it on a test stand, right. Depending what cam you have a break in time at what ever RPM the cam company says and for the time frame they say has to be done. Make sure you use a good break in oil with Zinc for the break in, and as everyone says prime the pump!! The motor should fire in a short period of time, If not you should re-prime the pump. Good luck with the motor.

I baught the engine from a friend..

I baught the engine already rebuilt and slightly used from a friend who is a well respected engineer,He said the engine was a running engine hardly used and sold it to me for next to nothing cuz hes a chevy guy (booo)and had no use for a mopar 440, as a stupid question though do i still have to prime the oil pump? the engine sat for a couple years.

Since it's out and easily accessible just prime it. I'm sure Summit has the long hex drive and you probably have a 1/2" drill. You can use a 3/8" but it might complain from the high load.

a few more quick ?'s

Do i need trans cooling lines, its freezing cold here right now,and i was told i could just use a few fans, also do I need a ballast resistor to start it? still learning, coming a long way but still not a mechanic, thanks for all your help, baught the moroso oil pump hex primer,I was gonna prime the engine to begin with someone told me i could bar it over by hand,to get the oil going ,but u all confirmed that i will just prime it!

I'd just make a small loop out of trans cooler hose or steel tubing and connect them together for the test run.

Technically you don't need a ballast to start it but you do if you want to keep it running after you let go of the key. During cranking the ballast is bypassed to give the coil a full 12 volts to help the engine start easier. You should set the ignition up as if it were running in the car, which includes a ballast compatible with the coil you are using.

Thanks again!

Thanks alot meep meep,U have been a huge help through this whole project,I hope this engine runs because I lost my job,and i cant really afford a serious rebuild right now,the engine is in damn good shape and it looks rebuilt with almost all original parts maybe a lumpier cam because the cam plug is not the original,I dont know yet unfortunately i did not rebuild it, but thanks for all your help,I gotta get some pics on here soon!
