steel cranks vs cast cranks

i am trying to decide which one?i am buying a 440 block,will any 440 crank fit any 440 block?regardless of the year block?i will try find a pre 74 440 block. thanks

You may want to read this before you discount a later block. The later block are thicker and even weigh more.

440's cast in '76 and later have CONSIDERABLY thicker main saddle supports. The only block we have found to have these supports are the 4006630-440 casting #, which was used from late 75 until the end of production in 1979

As far as cranks go most will tell you forged...Which are internal balanced...Cast are external balanced...After doing some research on both their are a few reasons to go for the cast...An Internal balanced cast crank is alot lighter than a cast crank...There fore will let the engine spool up faster for a much crisper throttle response...I guess this was a popular thing to do during the 70,s on street/drag cars...If you are going full on race then the forged is the only thing to have cause you are running alot higher rpm...Hopefully this will help..I,m sure there will be a few guys here that will disagree..

When I say Internal balanced cast crank this means the cast crank has been machined to Internal balance...Just to be clear..

Internal balancing for the forged versus external balancing for the cast....I will take the forged any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
