I am starting the resto of the steering column on my 69 Road Runner. I have a few questions as far as finishes on various parts:
-the firewall plate appears to be semi gloss black on the interior side; what finish is on the engine compartment side? Should it be semi gloss or bare steel?
-the shaft itself-in the engine compartment-is it bare steel?

Any help is much appreciated!

For my 1969 Coronet R/T I used bare steel color on the shaft, coupler and sleeve. I used semi-gloss on the firewall plate both sides. I used satin on the remaining parts.

Nice work. Looks great. Where did you buy the replacement parts? Did you have to replace the coupler to the steering box?

I bought the lower bearing and the coupler kit on Ebay but since I've found them on Mopar type parts stores online. I'll get back to you on the coupler seal. It is way better than the old style.

That looks great .. what tools were required TM?

I used a satin clear over the bare steel shaft. I found that krylon makes a textured plastic paint that matches the housing and turn signal collar.

Looks great "themechanic"! I painted my 69 steering column the same way. Mine had a broken auto shift lever spring, could not find one for the life of me, drove out to western NY this morning and picked up 2 complete steering columns, haven't taken them apart yet but I should now have 2 springs and extra parts if needed.

Did you buy them in Darien Center, buy the amusement park?
